It would be real nice if they were to fix the cross mountain road from Puerto Plata to Santiago.

I traveled it last week it there are little areas that have been paved and then you hit another bad area and then again a little strip that has been fixed.

Why not do the entire road?

Luperon is a tiny town that is over run by drugs and Street chicas.

What a waist of money.

elBuscoon:

Enfacies should be placed at the Santiago PPO autopista with 4 lanes all the way and tunnel where required,so i agree with you.
I guess the mega port is going to be left for the private co to build ? You noticed they don't tackle any major projects.,as stated above like the Santiago-PPO 4 lanes HW?
US$18.5 millions is nothing ,just for patch up work at San Felipe, and that should be the municipality's responsability.providing they are left with some tax money for its autonomy construction & sustanibily.
Church should be descarded since there is separation between State and Church.
The apartment complex is also the responsability of San Felipe municipality providing all the tax
money does not wind up at the capital, so is the Museum, along with the local rds,& Luperon rds.
The only thing i can see is the Aqueduct at Imbert completed all the way.

Hey Guys this wasteful spending is only Pennies according to the PLD thieves!

“Political patronage: it's only pennies”

In Diario Libre's editorial today, Thursday 28 June, editor Ines Aizpun challenges the "it's only pennies," argument being used by government officials to justify political patronage and wasteful spending. She makes the point that in other countries public spending is debated and analyzed to the last penny, but in the Dominican Republic, "public spending, especially spending that sustains political patronage, is a brake against growth in the country." "Simply, hundreds of millions of pesos, thousands, are taken out of the pockets of taxpayers to be used on chapters that do not generate welfare, infrastructure, jobs, education or health..."

She warns that a recently launched media campaign aimed at convincing citizens that this is not a problem in the Dominican Republic should be a general cause for concern.

"Yes, there is waste. There is a government payroll that is not related to the real needs of the administration, there is waste of the representation expenses of government officials, government jobs that are not even allowed by law, there are excesses in the delegations that travel abroad on official visits, there are government departments and institutions that only survive because they are there to justify the "bottles" (government jobs with no purpose), and payment of commissions that make works more expensive..."

She asks why the new government would want to hide the obvious, instead of applying the Danilo Medina campaign slogan of "correcting what is wrong?" She asks out loud why start a campaign to deceive public opinion when this is the perfect occasion to make this a fairer country, more productive, more competitive?

"But they insist those are 'only pennies'," she writes.

She comments that everything is about pennies; the national budget is pennies. Aizpun ends by commenting that eradicating illiteracy costs RD$3,135 per person. "Imagine the extent to which we could reduce the number of illiterates if we complied with the law of the deputy ministers and the deputy consuls!"

@Escott

Are you also all about "loom and gloom"?

Please enlighten me and explain more about this hospital story!!!

How do you think the USA got built in its infancy as a democracy?
Don't you think that they also had these political/corruption issues?

At least we are building things and moving forward, no matter how "maniana" slow.

As for Miller: It is my issue with him, look at all his posts and find something constructive or positive he has ever said or any type of compliment for Dominicans. He is prejudice and slams all Dominicans any chance he gets. If you look at his posts you may change your mind!

Cheers,

C.

The newspaper comments that the Fernandez administration could end its second term in government with a RD$80 billion fiscal deficit.

The deficit is attributed to excessive spending by the administration.

The Central Bank reports that government expenses increased by 26.3% during the first quarter of 2012 alone.
