Santo Domingo.- The Senate approved the bill which raises this year’s budget by RD$71.5 billion (US$1.8 billion), and authorizes the Treasury to US$500.0 million bond to bolster the electric sector.

The bill, whose approval is expected in today's session of the lower Chamber, had to be redrafted to eliminate US$1.6 billion in loans which several senators had opposed.

Ruling PLD party senators Tommy Galan, Felix Nova and Jose Rafael Vargas didn’t sign the reports submitted together with the bill, approved with 24 votes of a total of 31.

The Senate declared the legislation urgent and approved the Complementary Budget proposal in two readings yesterday, Wednesday 11 July. The complementary budget is designed to meet the fiscal deficit the government ran up during the months leading to the 20 May presidential election.

“Brazil: The great Nations are measured by their investment in education”

Here I thought it was by their investments in METROS!

"BRASILIA-The Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, said that great Nations should not be measured by economic indicators such as the gross domestic product (GDP) but by its investment in education."

"A great nation must be measured by what he does by their children and adolescents and not by the gross domestic product," Rousseff said in a speech on the occasion of the inauguration of the National Conference on the rights of the child and the adolescent in the Brazilian capital."

The head of State assured that Brazil is on the "road" become "a great nation" where quality education is a universal right.

Rousseff reviewed her Government's policies aimed at improving the income of the poorest, mandated schooling for children, and promised to increase lesson time of public schools.

Currently 33,000 public schools offer classes and extracurricular activities throughout the day and the Government wants to raise that number to 60,000 by the end of 2014, she said today that "no developed country" has schools operating only on time partial.

Brazil invests $18.261 per pupil, a lower figure than in other countries in Latin America such as Colombia ($19.067) or Mexico ($21.175) and well below most of the members of the Organization for Cooperation and Economic Development (OECD), according to a recent report of that body.
