La Romana, Dominican Republic.- Central Romana Corporation (CR) on Wednesday announced disbursal of more than RD$700 million in bonuses for all employees for the 2011-2012 harvest- milling cycle.

In a statement, the sugar, industrial and agro giant said the record figure is the highest ever paid to its personnel, surpassing last year’s bonus by more than RD $70.0 million.

In addition to the incentive Central Romana also provides employees health, education and housing programs, in addition to food aid for field workers and their families, as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The only institution that benefits from illegal haitian immigration for the last 30 years is the central romana, and his cubans owners...
Not Dominicans for sure..

As far as I know they are obligated to pay this bonus.

That is to share a % of their profits ...

It appears they go above and beyond what the labor code here requires.

Kudos !!!

There are a number of benefits in addition to the salary that Dominican employees are entitled to. Among those are severance benefits based on the employee’s seniority, profit sharing bonuses, a double Christmas salary and paid maternity and vacation leave.

Let us look at this in perspective ,,,Central Romana last year reported a record profit , probably in excess of 1 billion dollars but definitely in excess of half a billion ,,For every dollar that is spent here in DR , 7 % is sent to Florida as a management charge .
The bonus declared in this story is 700 million pesos which if we put into dollars it is about18 million which is shared by about 20,000 employees and this is an average of 900 dollars each ,,But of course the bosses get a huge amount so maybe a worker gets 600 dollars bonus .
so , in effect , it is peanuts
You could say they are not obliged to pay anything but I think ,if there was ever a company that should be nationalised it is in the Dominican sugar industry ..then the country would get its fare share .
Sorry but I give my three employees better bonuses than this during the year so I have no respect for La Romana Central

The equivalent of 600 US American dollars although "peanuts" in your estimation is a hugh chunk of cash for the average Dominican worker where the minimum wage is 4,900 Dominican pesos a month in the FTZs and between 4,485 and 7,360 pesos outside the FTZs, depending upon the size of the company; 2,600 pesos per month for the public sector; 150 pesos a day for farm workers who are covered by minimum wage regulations, based on a 10-hour day; 95 pesos per day for cane workers in the sugar industry.

So comparativelly speaking Central Romana is generous and does much more then most, above and beyond a lot of companies in the DR. People should be grateful and consider it an opportunity.. Hopefully, these workers will take the bonus and invest it to make it grow, perhaps start a micro-business. Unfortnately, the reality is most will piss it away and spend it on the frivolous and will continue to be dependents as paid slaves typical for those in the sugar case industry.

@Ricardolito

$900 US dollars is nearly 35,000 pesos, which based on Dominican minimum wage, is still quite a lot of money. The bonus does not include the double salary from December.

Now you say:
"Sorry but I give my three employees better bonuses than this during the year"
If that is the case, and that is not including Dec's double salary... where do I send you my resume and sign up :-)

This is very true but unfortunately only in theory. Everything the DR gov't touches, instead of turning into Gold, becomes poopoo. Leave it in the hands of private industry and in the end we will all be better off. It is sad but the last thing you want to allow corrupt politicians put their hands into the cookie jar.

Corrupt Politicians are the drones of the Corrupt Business Class, so what's the difference!

The difference Joe is that in private hands there is still hope, while with politicians there is none whatsover, only a time limit to how much to steal. And they must to do it quickly, there is perhaps only 4 years in the taking of the nations resources. Its all about getting into office for a license to raid, loot, plunder, ransack and turn the country into ramsackle.

Mr.g,

In my humble opinion there isn’t dimes worth of difference between a Politician and a Private Business Person it’s a revolving door of corruption!

The most current and evident example is the World Financial Meltdown led By the “Efficient Private Sector” and allowed to happen by their corrupt partners in government, which sometimes turn out to be the same people.

Just to name one “Henry Merritt "Hank" Paulson, Jr. (born March 28, 1946) is an American banker who served as the 74th United States Secretary of the Treasury. He previously served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs.”

Since, 1980 they have been systematically dismantling all the protective regulations instituted by the Roosevelt administrations after the Great Depression, with their bought politician accomplices off both the Republican and Democratic Party. The most blatant action taken by Bill Clinton and Phil Graham final revocation of the Glass-Steagall Act, which put the final nail in the coffin of Transparency in the markets.

pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/wallstreet/weill/demise.html

Thus, the financial melt of 2007 and now both parties to keep the public from focusing on the true nature of the Trillions of dollars that have been stolen from them, keep us entertained with the game of “Government All Bad and the Private sector All Good” via their agents in the CORPORATE MEDIA!

Both Government and the Private Sector have roles to play but neither should be paramount over the other and must be kept in check by strong Democratic institutions with the PUBLIC FRIMLY in control of those institutions. So as Lincoln said “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” He didn’t mention Corporations or Politicians he said the PEOPLE the ONLY TRUE SOVEREIGN in a Free Society, the individual citizen; armed with his or her VOTE!

Food for thought!

Just 4 banks in the US out of 8,099 institutionss, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Citibank make up 55 percent of that total asset pool 7 plus TRILLION dollars in essence under the control of four people!

That is very dangers for Democracy anywhere in the world!

The only thing the Private Sector has become efficient at in the last 30 years is at SCREWING the PUBLIC with the support of their bought and paid POLTICAL agents (you call them politicians) in the government, and that is almost universal throughout the world!

Mr. G.

Here is another example, closer to home, of the" efficiencies" obtained by the blanket thinking that ALL Privatization Is good!

“Companies earn millions of pesos with the trash, but Santiago is dirty”

“Twelve years ago, the authorities decided to privatize the cleaning service of the city, a decision which has proved to be a great failure”

SANTIAGO, Dominican Republic.-Twelve years ago the city authorities of Santiago decided to hire companies for the collection, transfer and deposit of waste, on the understanding that private efficiency would mean a more clean and healthy city.

With the passage of time that premise was shot to pieces. The Santiagueros have seen four private companies for the collection of garbage in the city paraded before them, and none have solved the problem of waste in public spaces.

Privatization has left a city ugly and contaminated, with makeshift landfills and pests in public spaces, putting at risk the health of more than 700, 000 people that inhabit the urban center of the Heart City, the same that for decades was proud to be the cleanest and most showy ornament of the country.

loving it ,,do you really think that 18 million dollars bonuses from a profit of more than 800 million is something to boast about ..and of course my employees get more than $600 as they always have family problems that they need money to solve,, they get about 11500 pesos every 15 days so the extra money I give them during the year is less than 45 days more ..I would hate to go through this life and be stingy with friends and employees .
If only the profits of la Romana Central would stay in the DR , we really would be a country others would envy

We met one of CR's executive almost 2 years ago and he was a native spaniard. These guys are modern days slaveowners. He told me " They (Haitians) have food, shelters, schools, pens etc" but if they (their children) don't work well at school " You go cut the cane ! ". I'm wondering how much illegals they are hiring and what the DR's gov is saying or will do about this illegals? I guess nothing . Slaveowners mofos need the DR's gov and institutions (immigration) to close their eyes anyway !

He also told us that the CR's top executives had "arrangements" with the former president (LF) and his government.

Not saying how much he despised Dominican people, even if his own wife is a native dominican. He told us that he did not feel safe in that country, so he would drive from La Romana to Santo Domingo, then take a Bus from Santo Domingo to POP.

Mr.g,

Here is an alternative to both the government and the private sector; the fight against the Monopoly of the Dominican USERY Banking System and their government facilitators!

He says that saving is crucial for the poor

La Altagracia Cooperative has assets of $ 3.5 billion pesos

SANTIAGO. For the poor sectors of Santiago the integral solution to its problems has been believing in its potential as savers and paying their debts on time, says the President of the Board of the cooperative La Altagracia.

Rafael Narciso Vargas, accompanied by Deyaniris Rodriguez, President of the “Committee of Review” and Pedro Ramírez, news director, says that what happened in Santiago with the sixty years of La Altagracia cooperative management, is worthy of a sociological study, because it breaks the molds of all assistance and patronage schemes that are fashionable in the country.

Vargas indicates that it has demonstrated a peaceful, effective, quiet social revolution can be and without relying on the State or private companies.

"The 3.5 billion pesos in assets that we have, our three billion loan portfolio, a late payment rate cy that is only a 2.0%, has an impact on the health, education, sports, culture, and environment", he said.

The Biggest Fear of the Government and the Abusive Bankers independent action of the Citizenry!
