SANTO DOMINGO.- The U.S. has lost its leading role top direct foreign investor in Dominican Republic in recent years, as Mexico and Canada now head the pack, with Venezuela and Colombia not too far behind.

Mexico investments in the country topped US$6.4 billion to June 2011 and ranks fourth in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than 20 Mexican companies, some of the country’s most prominent, contributed more than 15,000 direct and nearly 30,000 indirect jobs.

Direct Mexican investments in the country ranked first in 2010, with US$369.2 million, followed by Canada US$329.2 million; US$306.8 million, and Spain, US$299.3 million.

Mexico also ranked first in 2008 at US$1.05 billion, followed by the UK’s US$590.8 million; Canada’s US$383.3 million, and United States, with US$359.9 million.

Tourism, telecoms, retail, services, transport, mining, industries and industrial zones have been the main sectors for the investments.

Of course, DR also needs to attract Chinese investment - in railways and many other projects.

Roads can then be grassed over or orchards planted leaving a narrow strip for trains or guided buses.

Up-market tourism is great in car free environments such as areas of Switzerland.

With a good cost model local people could travel free ; as in Thailand.

Cable cars are excellent for sensitive environments - London has its first cable car.

Casualties in hospitals are reduced by extensive use of trains - plus if a tourist could arrive in SD airport and whisked to a tourist area such as Punta Cana or Bayahibe by triain DR would grow as a tourist destination.

Less oil would need importing and importantly less motor vehicles.

Keep the investment flowing - towards DR becoming an ecological leader.

That the US is no longer the biggest investor in the DR cannot possibly be good news.

Why not - sounds good to me - US is increasingly a minor player in World Economy.

Prior to world war 1 the Dominican economy was more geared to the European market. Then the USA brought about occupation, plus regime change in DR and the whole of the islands system was re-engineered to serve solely the USA market. To have various markets makes DR stronger and less dependent one buyer. It brings about more balance.

i see it as something positive, the less invetments the US has in DR the less influence in our affairs.

People invest because they think that they will benefit from the investment. If the largest economy in the world has decided that this is not a good place to put their money, that is not a good thing. Would you be happy if Uruguay, Iceland, or Chad were the largest investors in the DR. All that would mean is that the people of consequence have deemed us a bad investment.

No, people invest to create captive markets and suppliers that they can exploit. The population pays the price. Some investments are genuinely a win-win situation. Many are not and seek to control the market. If say Wal-Mart was to invest hugely it would copy its pattern in other countries - pay local farmers and producers a pittance and sell to undercut other honest retailers highly promoted junk foods. Enough McDonalds already!

So on balance it is very good that the US is no longer the predominant investor. Europe, Brazil etc. have invested in the DR with some good results.

The only thing Mexico can invest is on tele-communication been the owner is the richest man

in Mexico ,if not the world. How come so many Mexicans are in the USA as illegal when he could

do something for those people and crearte jobs for them in Mexico? Am sure the cost per

employee has to be less than in DR .Oh i got it ,the cell phones are made in Mexico and sold in

DR since Dominicans love cell phones and don't lose service because the copper is stollen or

there is not electricity. Aside of that i don't see a bi-lateral commerce with Mexico where DR could

export anything to Mexico so as to make it atractive.

When reports like these gets to the average reader he or she might think we are doing fantastic

when it is all the opposite unless there is an even trade balance, not a trade deficit. We do better

with EU since they buy from us agiculture goods such as bannanas etc.

Cuba China trade has increased threefold in the last five years. Discussions at a high level are now going on to increase trade and investment.
Has DR been missing out on Chinese investment?

To Mr ABC 200 - its pretty obvious you have a grudge against the US - Have you ever been to DR - without the US there that country would be a dump - who do you think takes care of things - who protects them - who is using drones now to stop the Colombian drug shipments - Yes US is having alot of problems- Our politicians are so out of touch with reality they are destroying the US and unless the people vote these idiots out we will continue to go down hill - Remember something - once you awaken the sleeping giant no one can stop them - Ask the Japanese and the Nazi's - before WWII the US was in same shape its in today - All we would have to do is stop the ships from China from unloading there products for a month - then watch what would happen - You really need to get out in the real world - The DR has the potential to be an incredilbe country - but they need education of their children

You are advocating a blockade against Cuba targeting China? - pretty extreme and out of touch as the rest of the World is happy to trade with both China and Cuba.

There are only Colombian drug smuglers because the US is the World,s biggest market for drugs.

US has, as with all countries, had its failures too when it has gone it alone. Vietnam for example. China too - the Great Leap Forward.

I am not advocating that the DR should cut off trade with the US - just that it should be open to win-win situations in trade and investment from most of the countries of the World.

There are plenty of critics of US policies both inside and outside the US - the policy that allows dealers to ship massive quantities of small arms to Mexico gangs for example.

In the past US was more manipulative and interfering in the politics of the region. Hopefully this era is over.

One of the most important air battles of WW2 was won without a single US plane taking part and one of the most im

You missed my point - what I was saying if to port of LongBeach and see who many ships come from China you would understand- Yes you are correct the US Government - not the US has this strange policy of sticking its nose where it doesnot belong all in the name of democracy - I wish our government would open its eyes and try and make peace not war. But when you have people serving in Congress who fall asleep during session and donot even know what email is then its a pretty impossible task - The young people of the world need to get all of these dinasours out and replace them with people who get it - I also never mentioned CUBA in my comments - Our relations with Cuba is so stupid but once we open the doors there in time it will hurt the DR economically as its much closer to US and was the Las Vegas of the Caribe before Castro came into power - You make alot of good points - sometimes its hard to support my government
