San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.- The State owned hydroelectric power company (EGEHID) rebuilt the dam at Jiguey at a cost of US$22.8M, and affirms it will provide 98 megawatts for the national grid.
EGEHID director Victor Ventura said the utility paid for the work with its own funds and includes the engineering, hydro-mechanical and electromechanical contracts, including work to repair the generator and turbine.
Jigüey, the highest dam in altitude, has two units totaling 49 megawatts.
He said generator and turbine parts were obtained as backup and the contract included the design, monitoring and repair of access roads, parking area, etc.
He said estimated revenues of US$19.5 million means the investment would be recovered in 17 months.

When will the investment in the USELESS METRO be recovered?
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
The metro is being expanded thank goodness ,,something more is desperately needed in the capital to allleviate the traffic problems ..All very well for the Dominicans and Haitians living in NY using the underground there and not knowing much about the traffic problems here and complaining when they do not realise that to thousands of people the metro is a godssend ...just stand at the corner of kennedy and Maximo Gomez and see every one using the train from there
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
and we need more dams ,,especially in the drier south and the east where water is often scarce
From: United States
you know what is depertately needed to alleviate urban traffic problems, Ricardolito? yes, you guessed it...less people in the city! know how to achieve that? you guessed it, again! spend more money in the rural areas, to make them liveable! people do not leave their ancestral homes to go to the cities because they like the daily sight of tall buildings with azure windows. they go for employment, since they cannot make a living where they were born. they cannot, in the DR case, because the development strategy is directed to urban swell, and outward looks. cannot work. they will end up having to build a metro in everbody's backyard, unless they re-think the development paradigms.

"The wrong investments"
Adriano Miguel Tejada shares his thoughts today in the Diario Libre editorial about the reasons why if the Dominican Republic has grown 7.2% on average over the past eight years, there is so much unemployment, poverty and unequal distribution of wealth.
"The question is relevant because governments come and governments go and the spread increases and the problems just grow bigger," he writes.
In his "humble opinion" the bottom line is that "we are spending the money in the wrong way."
He makes the point that adequate fiscal policy produces good results, and mentions the case of Brazil. And then he looks inward: "We are spending to finance those who do not want to pay for electricity service, the irresponsible unions of transporters, and all those who can lobby their way into the national budget," he writes.

Then, he says, "there is no plan to create jobs. Be this by real incentives with clear goals, adequate financing, or administrative facilities, we have to create the climate so that people take the leap to create jobs," he says.
But then he makes the point: "Here we have spent our lives promoting a culture of leisure. What is intelligent and fun is to make a living goofing off, or in politics or baseball, but not by studying or working. That way, we would not get ahead."
Then he sinks home to a recent decision by the government as to how to spend taxpayer money: "We all applaud that RD$10 million go to who wins a medal at the Olympics (gold medal). But we should give that money to whoever creates 1,000 jobs. That would be truly making a nation."

DR 1
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
yes Dreadlocks ..I agree but the world wide trend is for the cities to become bigger and the rural population to decline ..I suppose it is because the manual labour on the farms is replaced by machines and small towns are just dying out ,,They have tried many programmes in the UK and in the USA and in Australia and even in China to decentralise and to keep an even spead of people around the country but with little success,
In this country , of course, the population is growing at an appalling rate ,all over the country and for this and for the misery it creates we can , in a big way , blame the Roman Catholic church , who care sweet nothing about people and everything about dogma

Kudos, dreadlocks, you are absolutely correct. I use Haiti as a case in point, for awhile all investment was in Port au Prince and people flocked there to work, beg, and buy and especially to sell. The place became overwhelmed people washing in open manholes (yep, thanks to thieves we have these in place) as insufficient water, poor sanitation and so on. Cedras sent them out into the country and said go make a living, even with the embargo the place was better off then. People here do not want to do the manual labor of farming. There is money in it but also a lot to learn and know and no end of sweat. How many trees and plants can you identify? An old fellow I know can rattle off the names and characteristics of every tree I have pointed to and almost all of the plants and the city dwellers have the balls to talk about dumb camposinos.

Ricardito:
The only machine for farming in DR is called Haitians and as you know all big cities depend on
the rural population for it to strive.
Why do you think Trujillo kept the "campecinos" in the rural areas, and if they did not farm their
land it was taken away from them and given to those that wanted to work. That was the best
law of the land in 1933 that i can think of and the title went to those that farmed it for 20 yrs.
All the undesireble jobs went to the Haitians forcing Trujillo to expell them by force in 1937,
My paternal grandfather was one of those landowners campecinos in Altamira whome he had
entrusted his lands and moved to Santiago with all his family away from hard work. Now the
capital is full of campecinos and the Haitians are doing all the hard work so they can live
comfortable.Eventually the campecinos would not be able to compet with DR/CAFTA members
then what are they to do?

Josean :
Very good article on Adriano Miguel Tejada and i agree with his thoughts on" the wrong
investments"i have been saying that all along,by observation thruout my life span.
That was good analogy in his part ,1000 jobs instead of giving away 10 million pesos to
a gold nedal winner.
You do some good research and i appreciate your hard work, Josean keep it up good night
for now. By the way how about answer to some of my inquires on the Polytechnical institute.

Going back to the high dam. Not only it would pay back in 17 months but it is clean energy and
supply water for the near by farmers as well. More such dams should be built.
