Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez yesterday inaugurated Dominican Republic’s first Community College, located in Santo Domingo East, which can house 15,000 students.

The State Works Supervisory Office built the facility at a cost of RD$1.8 billion and features 14 buildings with a fire detection system and leading edge technology in each of the areas.

"Students entering the educational organization will receive a diploma certifying them as professionals after two years of study," Fernandez said of the Community Technical Institute (ITSC).

He said under the ITSC’s new system students learn by doing, because each area has the necessary equipment to have a relationship with the instruments and implements to transform a raw material into a given product.

i think someone coming out of this school is better prepared than someone that goes to a regular 4 year college, the reason behind it is real world experience, at pcmm or uasd you only get the idea/theory behind what you are studying and not real world experience.

With the PRD PPH, the real cost would be RD$0.00!

No money, nothing built, just the debt left for us to pay...

This is a great advancement in education in the DR. I hope they open a new one of these every year. So many people will benefit from associate degrees.

This is a great move. It's addressing the issues of students that find it hard to commit to a 4,6, or 8 years of schooling.

Not to critice it I think the idea is wonderfull once the required teaching equipment is inserted into

the building. As it is now it is an empty shell at a cost of of US$47,368.421. It is going to cost as

much to equip it. It is not like a regular (bachillerato) where all that is taught is theory & academic

subjects.

What i want to know is what are the requirements to get in as far as knowlege goes? Could you

apply directly from the 8th grade or you have to be a HS grad?If it the latter, then it is Polytechnical

University offering two years of an (ASSOCIATE DEGREE).Otherwise it is no different from a Voc/

Technical HS.Which is good and one of such school should be built in every province of the nation

Now how about the Technical teachers ?Would they have to be imported from Spain,Chile,SO.AM.

As i recall DR does not have such capacity yet. Over all it is a good start for education directly

applied.

It took him long enough!

The dominican republic will always be in the RED.... How was this degenerate any better than Hipo.

Lee-Flea controls the island as if it were a battered woman, he slaps her around, rapes her and sodomizes her children for years then gives her gifts to forget the pain and suffering while saying " I did it because I love you".... because the lack of education and being out of touch with her surroundings she forgets what she went through.

I read all these messages from people living in the cities of the USA and using the metros and driving around on perfectly paved roads and using all the facilities that the american people have built over several centuries and these people want the DR to have dirt roads and traffic jams and remain in the appalling primitive condition it was in under Mejia and the Presidents before him .
Because the DR has little capital of its own , it has to borrow so we can live just a litle bit like those people in the USA who want us still to use horses and carriages
Thank goodness for a forward looking President and a good central bank
And yes we will need to find good teachers for this college and probably from overseas ...just as the medical students here are often taught by foreigners

Whose fault is but ours?Living in the USA the average Dominican can't even have ends meet,
nevertheles you see him with the latest car of the year and maxing out his credit cards. No
diferent from all the Presidents and their administration we had back home present and pass.
We have in DR the have and have not .The well to do, does it at the back of their compatriots the
have not and those will be in debts for the rest of their lives, with the longsharks Don't blame the
outsiders for our missfortune when we can't even manage our own house less the country we
claim is ours.we always try to outdo the neighbors by competeng with him.
If the Central Bank was that good ,why does't it lend out loans to the little guys at reasonable interest so he/she can buy a pick up truck to go on business instead of a jippeta to show off or down payment for a house ?.Why is it all has to come from Central gvt.as if we were Comunist country?

As if to what you said is so, and it is, The USA has had its long history of immigrants from Europe and you are looking at the results of well planed immigational ideas from all over Europe. From
the 17th- mid 20th century least on the 21st century where they come from all over the world to rip the product and take industries out of the country left out with non skills labores to be a 3rd world country by mid 21 st century. Had DR adapted those ideas as Argentina under Peron giving vvisas to those Europeans as Germans,Italians,Spaniands after Spain's Communist Republic collapsed it would had been a diferent story .Chile Uruguay,Brazil did the same after 1948.
DR tried to do the same under Trujillo but it was a failure since he was too totalitarian. They just left Hitler and Mussolini and Chapita had good ties with those regimes ,so it did not work specially of what he pulled on the Haitians in 1937,

Sure we had a vast amount of unskilled immigration from Haiti since Trujillo got killed ,but is it
what we want? This Polytechnical school should had been built in Trujillo's days and by now must all Dominicans would had retired with a skill and did not have to emmigrate but teach others. The start of industrial revolution would had taken place specially with the armament industry in place.Trujillo was too narrow minded along with his advisers mainly Balaguer as not to create such schools and take advantage of the ZCheck Tecnicians to teach at night known dam well they were not going to last forever caged up in an Island with-out liberty.DR had the best it was going to have in its life cycle 1933-1955. Sosua is the only remaining European ties and the first salami and cheese factory in the country as the Colonial City was then or the Grandious Rome used to be by visiting the Colliseum.

They have to point out that a $46 million campus has a fire detection system as something special.

Anyway I hope it provides a good education and training to the students It will be nice to get properly trained people into the work force. This place has too many college educated professionals like lawyers and engineers that are half ass at their jobs..

Josean where are you? This is only part of the 4% to education.
We have to think of the future and forget what we used to be as the first of everything but the least of all of those that are far ahead of us, when we were their creator in the Colonial days.
If any one deserves the credit should be Spain and its Empire to be spread from Espanola to
the rest of the continet from North to south america, due to its critical location not because of its natives, since they were not civilized in the European's standard.
Belive me I have seen them all from the Patagonia Noth to California in the Pacific -from the patagonia North in the Atlantic to Brazil ,Colombia 5 times, to Gringo land to Ontario and Quebec,Central America and some ports in the Mexican ,Pacific side.
This is a good start thought ,better than the Metro or as good ,just don't let it die down and improove on it ,specially where skill is needed for tourism .

Chilinout:

You are 100% correct on the above statement "the country has too many half ass trained proffesionals in the engineering and law field" maybe that is why the lawyers must become
politicians since they can'rt make it in that field and as politicians they get rich fast by stealing

I hope they place this 2 years polytech under the State University for its Humanities as well,
It is very important if you are going to deal with the public not to be a simple JOE, but show
you have some background of something when dealing with the public specially with tourism.

Another thing if they are half civil they should have full acountability for the equipment proccured
and keep close watch on the instruments so it does not walk out in the middle of night specially
if made out of any metal as the armament industry did in Balaguer's days by those stupid GORILLAS,to be looking to buy another one now since they learned its value

josean am looking for you:

What have you to say about this investment in education? I call upon you to help answer some

of my questions above same as Dr Dreadlocks and others . All of us were after educatioin

investments and this is the best way to get started by creating infrastructure of this magnitude

instead of the board of education pocketing all the money and creating nothing.as well as hiring

friends of the gvt in place .At least this time they have no friends if they have to import knowlege

and pay what they are worth.

I wonder if central AC is to be installed in all the buildings as a country which is alway in need of

it,its maintanace should be free since the students could do it themselves as part of their skills.,

Mr. Rancier ,

I felt I would allow the Clapping Purple Seals to have their MICRO SECOND of Glory with this miniscule drop of water in the vast desert of EDUCATION under funding that Lie-onel Fernandez magnified in his last 8 worthless years!

But you see when I comment it’s bad and when I don’t elanomino has Tachycardi!

You see, Lie-onel Fernandez is like the prize fighter who does nothing for first 2 and half minutes of the round and then throws a flurry in the last 30 seconds to impress the Judges, to see if he Can Steal a Win, get a Split Decision or if worse comes to worse a Draw.

However, this is one Judge he could not even impress if he Discovered the Cure To Cancer.

I think Bobby Joe's analogy of the battered woman unfortunately says it all!

If I comment on this "Glorious Achievement" it would serve to legitimize this Narco-Criminal and give him some social standing which in my book he has NONE.

It woulda been better to give pay raises to more teachers, invest more in math, writing and reading. Instead of this campus which while very nice is kinda unnecessary right now.

Yacahu;

What makes you think a pay raise is going to make technicians out of them?.
If they can't learn the basics skills in writing and reading in elementary school as well as math then let them drop out. The teacher's salary increase is not going to make a diference.
As to how necessary this polytech is? ,it was long over due by 50 years .

It makes sence, an evaluation of what we are getting for that payraise would definetly help.

Add to that if they are certify teachers they deserve a cost of living increase now ,since the nation

is doing so good,
