Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic is already receiving United Nations funds for reducing its greenhouse gases, the major cause of climate change

 Most of the projects listed in the National Climate Change Council’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) belong to the renewable energy sector: wind farms, hydroelectrics, biomass use, and fuel switching, followed by those from industrial processes, such as cement plants.

The country’s first carbon credits were issued to the Duquesa landfill in 2011 for the development and implementation of the project “Bionersis,” which involves the site’s construction, operation and maintenance. The project’s estimated emissions reduction is 392,870 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

National Climate Change Council CDM Office director Moses Alvarez said the landfill management company Lajun, is registered with the UN Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC),

With the registry Duquesa sells nearly 400,000 tons of CO2 to France at US$10 each, equal to US$4.0 million annually.
