ROME. – President Leonel Fernandez today urged the United Nations to become the voice of a new, fairer and more efficient international financial order and end the speculation which in his view destabilizes food prices.

During a conference in the Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Fernandez also affirmed that "something irregular is happening in the markets," where speculation on commodities joins the financial crisis, now based on the problems of debt and banks in the euro zone.

"The truth is what’s happening is unlike anything before and has had a tremendous human impact. It has to do not only with food or energy, but part of a system that has to be reconsidered. And the UN has to be spokesman for a fairer and more efficient global financial order," he said.

"These days we’re seeing an increase in oil prices and farm products. It has been argued that in the case of corn is the drought in central U.S., but while there’re market fundamentals, speculation acts to exacerbate their effects and the exacerbation is what’s causing a dramatic impact on food importing countries," the Dominican President said.

"It’s something that is having a devastating, dramatic impact over people, which is distorting the governments, which have to intervene with con subsidies for their citizens and this generates a fiscal deficit and destabilize the macroeconomic balances of the States," Fernandez said.

Sound message. But also each country needs a sustainability plan. The DR could grow more crops and slow the increasing import of oil by, for example, restricting car imports.

Here we go again. The emperor are now competing in the main sport of DR. EXCUSES. an he is good at it. He has done nothing but robbing the DR coffer for the last 10-15 years. When the crib is empty and the population is about to revolt because of the dramatic impact over people.

His concern is about: which is distorting the governments, which have to intervene with con subsidies for their citizens and this generates a fiscal deficit and destabilize the macroeconomic balances of the States," Fernandez said.

His only concern is that this leaves less in the coffer to steal. He is completely lost in his egotrip univers.

The funny thing is do he believe anyone in the real world look at him as anything else as a utter JOKE.

as much as it pains me, i have to agree with anthonyc on this. Leonel lives in a world of dreams. who does he think controls the UN? it is all the developed countries, and the megacorporations, and the commodity cartels. why would they change the rules, which make them rich, because some tin pot kleptocrat suggests it? he really needs to get another hobby, besides lining his pockets with taxpayer money.

I hear, it seems to be more appealing, if LF were asking the UN to kill half of the world population to solve a problem that had not been created by the poor (!)

Danilo Medina and the 2012 budget

"Budgetary TIME BOMB?"

Nelson Suárez, budget specialist, has said that the supplementary budget submitted by President Fernández is an assault on stability.

Danilo Medina will need to fine spin the handling of the economy. What the Government of President Leonel Fernandez is leaving for the Administration that begins August 16 does not represent anything good.

Taxes must be raised. Public spending must be reduced, including official investment. It will be necessary to increase the education budget, as part of a prior commitment.

Nelson Suárez, budget specialist, has said that the supplementary budget submitted by President Fernández is an assault on stability. The 2012 budget already has deficit of 0.9% of GDP and with the supplementary budget it will rise to a 3.9% of GDP, an amount exceeding the 93 billion pesos.
Something, never before in the national history.

The commitments of the Government in 2012 are many. In the first six months several public institutions have already exhausted their entire budget they were assigned for 2012. They must tighten the pockets of the country and reduce government spending. The blame will fall to Medina, where things are not well clarified.

Our comment this Friday is on this subject.

He is just looking for a post at the UN at any cost no matter what !
The chicken problem has not been solved yet.blaming the price of corn and soya has gone up to
feed the chickens and that is why the chicken price has gone up.This is all B/S ,the Cibao region can produce chicken feed at relatively low cost. By imporing chicken feed he is killing our farmers.
What a line of shit as the FIRST LADY getting UN recognition for the poor children of DR. I can't
believe as to what extent this two go to be remembered by the world community as good doers.
