Santo Domingo.– Wind generated power in March, April and May hit 9.24GWh (1% of total
production in the month), 4.97GWh (0.46%) and 6.7GWh (0.55%), respectively, according to OC's
report.
The country's installed wind power capacity by year-end will increase to
85MW with expansion of Los Cocos, and up to an additional 100MW are
scheduled to come online by end-2013 with projects Guanillo and
Matafongo.
State-owned electric utility (CDEEE) in May signed PPAs with
Parques Eólicos del Caribe (Pecasa) and Grupo Eólico Dominicano for
Guanillo and Matafongo, respectively. Other developers hold provisional
wind power concessions.
The first wind farms in the country were inaugurated in October with Energético Punta
Cana-Macao's 7MW Quilvio Cabrera complex and EGE Haina's 25MW Los Cocos
park.

"The D.R. Government guarantees the purchase price of the electricity generated by the windmills as well."
Mr. AC, Let's clear this up. Our govt must guarantee the price per kilowatt in order to attract investors in building solar, wind, etc. If this were not so, few would want to take chances in this volatile market.
What you don't see, is that oil and it's derivatives are much pricier per KW, than that generated by alternatives.
Fuel must be purchased in an ongoing basis and makes us slaves of Chavez, of the fluctuating world market and constant need for more of it.
This money for fuel, will take flight from our shores, never to be seen again!.. It is expensive, wasteful, and very polluting.
The answer isn't fossil fuels, Nuclear fission or "cold fusion" (There's no such thing).
The way to go is to combine many alternatives into constant megawatt producers and free ourselves from the tyranny of depending on other nations for dirty, expensive, and finite oil.

The main reason for humanity's stubbornly staying the course with oil, is because it is still convenient and relatively cheap. But this won't last forever. If the trend continues and we keep using up oil in an ever increasing amount, in 20 year's time, there will be very little left and so expensive, we in DR will have no fuel for our cars and even less to produce electricity.
Just go ahead and keep paying $3.50 per gallon in the US, and over $5.00 in DR.
If you can afford that price now, wait a while. Let's see how many of you will, in just a couple of years.

Mr. AC. Allow me to clarify one small detail we may not have discussed: ..After the initial investment of building hydroelectric dams, the "fuel" to power it is totally free.
What powers wind turbines, solar photovoltaic panels, ocean tides, biodiesel, methane digesters, etc. are all totally free, and clearly without technological encumbrances/hurdles.
We can produce biodiesel and methane to last forever. We can generate electricity to satisfy our industrial and residential needs without burning a drop of oil.
We don't need nor want to rely on any country and their oil for our energy needs! We can be self-sufficient and energy independent for the next 4.5 billion years, when our star will swallow us all, as it becomes a "red giant". Until then, We can live happily and satisfactory by embracing the sciences and the technology within it.
Oil and its' derivatives are still too cheap for our own good!

So my schizo friend..If the hat fits you..put it on baby!
"It's ALL your simptoms 100 % .."
You had it right the first time (all his symptoms!!)
"The Future is Nuclear (Including cold fusion) and Hydrogen if they can find a way to produce it cheaply."
Fusion and hydrogen yes, nuclear is still reliant on someone digging it up and selling to you, then paying someone to store it way safely for a few thousand years..
Stepping forward with multiple renewable energy forms and developing new ones is the only way forward along with reductions in unit uses of power.. more efficient cars, lights, TV, AC units etc etc.
"Stop believing all those Greenpeace press releases. Methane from garbage is insignificant.
One huge dump could power just a few 100 homes."
That's hundreds of home that have no need for fossil fuel power then isn't it? and is at least used for something... Why ignore it?
We will stop believing the Greenpeace stuff if you stop believing the oil and coal lobby...
"We will stop believing the Greenpeace stuff if you stop believing the oil and coal lobby..."
and the Koch Brothers!
"I don think is the Dominican Government that is building these projects but the private sector."
All are heavily subsidized by the D.R. Government.
You said ....¨All are heavily subsidized by the D.R. Government.¨
I know that the electricity produced by fossil fuel, in Dominican Republic, is subsidize, to compensate for the variation of fuel prices. But, what kind of subsidy are you talking about with wind power? Other than the initial investment I don´t see any other?
Subsidies for fossil fuels is wrong as well.
The D.R. Government guarantees the purchase price of the electricity generated by the windmills as well.
@ROnvane
Excellent post.. Just excellent and VERY intelligent by the way..
"Stop believing all those Greenpeace press releases. Methane from garbage is insignificant.

Mr. AC, I don't know how old you are or what field of study you've delved in. Let me say I'm 62 with a degree and been around long enought to know what I'm talking about....So please do not tell me otherwise, what I already know.
"We will stop believing the Greenpeace stuff if you stop believing the oil and coal lobby..."
and the Koch Brothers!
Both have an agenda. One's is for freedom of the markets and expression and the other (Greenpeace) is an organization connected to terrorism around the world and advocates fascist ideals of government controlled businesses and economy as well as the suppression of freedom of expression
With government prices supports are allegedly needed for the reasons you stated but in reality it is needed because of populous policies such as allowing huge numbers of voters steal electricity.
If the energy industry in the D.R. was privatized you can rest assure that the issues with power shortages would quickly be a thing of the past.
Mr.
"Mr. AC. Allow me to clarify one small detail we may not have discussed: ..After the initial investment of building hydroelectric dams, the "fuel" to power it is totally free."
Free? What a typical response of one who hates the free market.
Do you think that once the wind turbines are up there not a single penny that will need to be spent?
Do you have any clue how much is involved with the maintaining of wind turbines or dams?
Yes .. far less than continually paying for oil, coal or gas ( with all it's fluctuations from a foreign country), refining it, plus transport it to the DR then transport within the DR and then a crew to run and maintain it and repair it 24/7 356. Not to mention all the part needed.
DT should have a poll, "what is the time for your neighborhood? Aye coño no luz!
