SANTO DOMINGO. – Keeping his campaign promise to “Do what has never been done,” president Danilo Medina will personally manage government purchases, according to the results revealed after his first cabinet meeting.
The measure was approved by the Council of Ministers as part of the sweeping Guidelines for the Code of Ethics for Officials, seeking austerity in government.
It also bans the use of credit cards for staff and prohibits the purchase of any vehicle for one year, and limits travel abroad.
The measures will be reviewed every three months during one year, and the official who violates the Code will be fired.

Josean, there are many guys here who tell us that LF was a great president, because he built overpasses , and bridges, and roads. well, construction is not the reason why he was elected. he was elected to provide LEADERSHIP. building bridges is the purview of the Minister of Construction, or whatever his title is. when the owner of a sports team elects a head coach, he does not give him the responsibility of making sure the uniforms are clean on game day. that is taken care of by housekeeping. he is chosen to set the tone. he makes the game plans. he strategizes. he assesses the opponent. he looks for his strengths, and weaknesses. it is his responsibility to put the best team on the field on game day. he is the LEADER. the players take their cues from him. the buck stops with him. Winston Churchill was a leader. he brought out the best in the British spirit, during the German aggression. he rallied the troops. he made people realize their duties, and responsibilities
From: United States
he gave then courage to resist. he did not build airstrips, not airplanes, nor did he fire a rifle. there were other people charged with those responsibilities. LF failed as a leader, because he had no vision, no ideas, no clue, and no morals. he will always be the Emperor Who Had No Clothes.

Why even bother with adding restriction on a in a country where no president has had the balls to grab the bull by the horn and start putting politicians in jail.
If most politicians don't even stop at restriction stated in the constitution why would they bother to listen to Danilo's "suggestions".
How about Danilo bring his buddy Euclides into court for electricity theft and proceed from there on into making suggestions to other. At least then he would have more ground to walk on.

What some people have a difficult time with is acknowledging that DR has MANY deficits, and transportation is one of the most glaring ones holding back the nation. Medina is doing right to emphasize full 8 hour day quality educational opportunities for K-6 grade students. But he has stated that only 80% of eligible students will be covered if his plans are fully met. So 20% of students will be be outside looking in.
So much to do and not enough resources available to fully eliminate the deficits faster. But Medina is on the right track.

From: United States
Spimx, i see that you get the idea. for the metro to achieve its goals, one of the first things that has to happen is that people who own cars will have to leave them at home, and take the train. it is not simply a matter of providing air conditioned transportation for people who would otherwise ride a 1979 Datsun carrito. if the car owners still drive, then what is the point? given the cultural imperatives of the local rank and file, is Dona Mercedes from Arroyo Hondo going to get on public transportation, to mingle with the riff raff? does she want to sit beside Fausto, and have him belching salami gas in her direction? heck, that is why she laid out all that money to buy the Volvo, a lasting reminder that she is a woman of means, and Belkis is not.

"people who own cars will have to leave them at home"
So, you're recommending $10 or $20 dollars per galon, just like in Europe?
actually, if they leave the cars at home, the price of gasoline will come down. really! i mean it! it is called the Law of Supply and Demand.
Dready said:
"hopefully, with Danilo, the DR will not continue to occupy the top spot as being the country known for the most wasteful government spending in the world. maybe, instead of having 15 deputy ministers of sports, he will only have one, like normal governments do."
As I said, Danilo is looking good and we await the action or meat to follow the words. But he's stating some real and positive changes. And to think Dready, even with 15 sports ministers the DR outpaced J easily these last.......40 years! Imagine if DR ever gets its house in order. :))

easily outpaced Jamaica in WHAT? if you did, how come you are in a lower category in the Human Development Index? should that not be the other way around? how come Jamaica is in the High Development category, and the DR is in the Medium Development category? care to explain that one, sabelotodo?
Those still living in 2030 will still be paying it off and it will still be subsidized by ALL of the country...
Wisdom would be to have built a cross country rail network...
