SANTO DOMINGO. - La Sirena, a supermarket and department store chain operating in various cities, has been sold to the U.S.’ biggest retailer Wal-Mart, for more than US$800.0 million.
Quoting sources close to the deal, elnuevodiario.com.do reports that the chain owned by the Grupo Ramos has been at the center of persistent rumors, that the deal is nearly concluded. “We are aware of it, but we can’t comment anything about it.”
It said the formal transaction was slated for 16 August, but postponed for another date, possibly announced in the coming days. “Some say it will be Saturday, August 25.”
The deal, the outlet reports, doesn’t include Pola, the country’s biggest supermarket chain.
The Ramos group of companies is among the country’s biggest employers, second only to the Popular Financial Group.
There are 21 La Sirena stores nationwide, 13 of which are located in greater Santo Domingo.

Rumors of this deal have been circulating for some time now. WalMart wanted to enter the DR market, but many strong lobbying from established retailers like the Ramos group, The Lama's and Corripio's
oppose their entry with passion.
Now the retailers in DR will have to get more competitive in pricing, which is a good thing.
The Ramos family, who migrated from Spain penniless, and used to make $150 pesos a month selling shampoo's in Avenida Mella, are now big time players, due to their persistence and hard work.

Just trying to put my two cents worth, the two Ramos brothers are the hardest working Spanish immigrants I have known, and they deserve to collect the fruits of their hard labor.
Juán Ramos split from his brother, some time back, and founded "La Cadena" supermarkets, in the city. Their main store in Avenida Mella, used to sell Dominican made shampoo's and rinses (Lafier), soaps and plastic goods, mainly to the Haitian market.

@Vacanos-Generoso sounds like the DR is a land of opportunity!
Anywhere can be a land of opportunity, it does not matter neither the time nor the place, and yes even in the the DR.........Each and every one of us can make or create our own opportunities. There is no need to neither wait nor expect others to hand it over to us on a silver platter. And to achieve that we must get rid of the entitlement mentality where we expect government to solve and take care of our problems.
Since colonial times foreigners have been flocking to our shores in search of fortunes while our natives jump over, believing the grass is greener on ther other side when it is not necessarily true. Only hard work combined with persistence and determination is what makes for ones success.
There is not a secret formula, it only takes time, tenacity, long and arduous work which is exactly what few are willing to do, where instead most prefer to take the short cut and simply get burnt in the very end.

Did you know that Walmart is run by the Devil himself!? did you know that Walmart is an instrument to ruin the United States economy? Not to mention that of every other progressive European nation??...and now, Latin America?
It is a commie plot to take over the world! China will become the superpower it always planned to be, and will dictate what to do, where to work, live, and how many kids we can have!!
It will do away with baseball, bachata and mangu, and replace it with Tai-Chi, fried rice and sweet&sour chicken!!.. Good heavens!
Not many people are onto this! You may not believe me. Who would!? It sounds too crazy to be true, right? ....Well, don't say I didn't warn you!!

false story see comunique from ramos group today
oppose their entry with passion.
Generoso
General something never change with liberals whether in Russia, Europe, DR or USA. You dont know the opposition our Commies liberals here in NYC put up against walmart. Meanwhile we are getting robbed by K-mart, Target. But liberals know what is best for all of us. I signed the petition, sent a letter to my Coulciman. Nothing work against these Communists. As long as they continue their handout program here in the city they will control the government.
A well run company takes up shop in the DR and the Dominican people get quality products and services at great prices
our Commies liberals
a simple mind can only see things in terms of labels. all economic ventures have negatives, and positives. the fact that you can buy shampoo for 2 cents less at Walmart comes with a price to other sectors. some people see big pictures. you have a small, simple mind, and see everything in reductionist terms. so, if people disagree, they are commies. you need to grow up, and to get an education, whichever comes first. as to the notion of getting better prices at La Sirena...i beg to differ. they do have some good sales on items which are a week away from expiration date. i still find my local supermarket to be less costly.
Agreed. By far the best quality at great prices.

how about you give me a list of things they sell that have better quality than other stores, at better prices? i sometimes have the urge to shop there, so help me with my shopping list, if it is not too much trouble.

What are you talking old man? Ever heard of the word competitivenes? The only people that tries to limit people's choice are Libs/communist. It is a simple fact.

people have the choice to go to Sosua, and to carouse with women of the evening, and create a certain type of atmosphere, in which THEY are comfortable. so, i take it that in your simple little mind, the civic groups that wish to place limitations on that enterprise, are commies and liberals. the family people, who want safe streets for their wives and children, are commies. the people who do not want the area overrun with touts, and pimps, and harlots, are liberals. man, how do you find your way out of bed in the mornings?

I dont know my list will include hygiene stuff that you probably dislike to buy. But if you care there are some other stuff that might interest you like a few month ago I bough a nice Sansung 42 inch LCD for less than $500. :)

i take that answer to mean that you do not have a clue what the terms of the takeover are, yet you are celebrating. very intelligent.
There is not a secret formula, it only takes time, tenacity, long and arduous work which is exactly what few are willing to do, where instead most prefer to take the short cut and simply get burnt in the very end.

so, vacanos, i guess that you equate domestic safety, and such matters of personal life, with conservatism, right? liberals, and commies make for unsafe streets, right? so, then , genius, what explains the fact that Cuba is such a relatively safe place in which to live? or, how is it that countries like the Scandinavian states, which have such a high socialist component, are relatively safe, compared to the USA, which so capitalist?
Dreads "i take that answer to mean that you do not have a clue what the terms of the takeover are, yet you are celebrating. very intelligent."
Of course very "intelligent of me" for cheering the introduction of Walmart into the DR market. What all of the sudden they will deviate from what made them the best in the USA? :roll

Cuba live in a totalitarian state that is not in a free society. That was not very smart Dreads.
Dreads, do you know the crimes rate in Scandinavian states like Sweden lately?
"Sansung 42 inch LCD for less than $500."............. Is that a Chinese imitation?
How about a SAMSUNG!
PS
LCD is out LED is what's in, you got robbed!

first of all, they will not be able to operate the same business model in the DR as they do in the USA. in the USA, they can undersell other stores because of their inventory system, which is similar to the Michael Dell laptop model. they cannot do it here. they save money on their inventory control, and pass on the savings to consumers. that cannot happen here, for many reasons. the best they can be is La Sirena, under a different name. there will be no radical changes, i assure you.

So you are the only one that can be able to speculate on the WORST CASE SCENARIO. But I can't on the track record of Walmart. Again :roll : roll :roll
they know what they're doing, this Walton Family are smart business people.
Josie "LCD is out LED is what's in, you got robbed!"
Josie LED is a new thing. I stated a few month ago and to be more precise in January. Even in today standard it is still a good price. But then again you are regarded here by many as the retard of the article section and your brain can only write METRO.
So you are the only one that can be able to speculate on the WORST CASE SCENARIO. But I can't on the track record of Walmart. Again :roll : roll :roll
can you translate that sentence into a recognizable language? i apologize, but i do not translate gibberish.

It is about time, Hey Josean must be really sick about this news because he and Veronica are always asking themselves why company want to invest in the DR, this just prove them wrong about the great business investments opportunities that are in this country.
THATS ONE OPPORTUNITIE, WHERE IS THE 2ND ONE?
WALMART HAS 2,000 STORES IN MEXICO. YES MEXICO HAS OVER 100,000 PEOPLE I KNOW THIS.
No problem.

Tu puede ser el unico en especular sobre la intencion de Walmart en el pais pero los otros no pueden? Sin embargo la trayectoria de Walmart en los Estados Unidos han sido excelente. :roll :roll :roll

They were all CUCKOO for the CHOO CHOO TRAIN at first but during the election and afterwards it has disappeared from the PURPLE Radar!

Soon the DR will be just like another step child of the US like PR.
If Wallymart comes to the DR, they will eat up ALL THE SMALL MOM AND POP BUSINESS.....
@ Josie STFU
Make me Tough GIRL!
I was gonna say that Walmart will put many stores out of business...-bad thing?
Then I thought: competition is good for the public.....-good thing?
Then I remembered: 90% of what Walmart sells, is made in China.....-bad thing?
Then I realized: I don't know what this means for our manufacturing free zones....-bad thing?
Then I concluded that I don't know diddly about anything concerning this matter-....bad thing?
I'll just sit here quietly and read.
"Quality products" made in China, displacing more local jobs and sending profit OS.
Wal-Mart was responsible for $27 billion in U.S. imports from China in 2006 and 11% of the growth of the total U.S. trade deficit with China between 2001 and 2006. Wal-Mart’s trade deficit with China alone eliminated nearly 200,000 U.S. jobs in this period.
91% of Wal-mart products are made in China.
And this is a good thing according to you Dr AC??
"Then I concluded that I don't know diddly about anything concerning this matter-....bad thing?
I'll just sit here quietly and read with you Ron."
Maybe, just maybe Walmart will ask China to make a Metro toy train just for Josie.....
I remember back when Walmart first opened up in Texas.
Little by little all the tire shops closed up, then the clothing stores and so on.
Don't get me wrong I shop Walmart all of the time and business is business but this is a case of the big fish eating up the little fish.
This could be thr GREATEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE DR. Well next to Danilo
It would be nice to see prices droping rather than going up every week.
It would be nice to see prices droping rather than going up every week.
so, i guess that you believe that if they drive the competition into oblivion, they will have a motivation to keep prices low?
Good point Dread,
In other countries like the US and Mexico they have some strong compatition, but here in the DR they would run some out of business and maybe the ones that make it will learn how to be competitive and stop screwing us all at the register.

"inventory control" = cheap stuff all made in China...they also forced their US manufactures to move to China if they wanted to still sell in Wal-Mart..
"inventory control" hahahha that's great
"that cannot happen here" a company that size has very deep pocket to satisfy even the most greedy politico wanting to make them follow trade laws here...
"there will be no radical changes, i assure you" and how will you do that?
The only change I see coming (not even a name change) is even more of La Sirena's products will be imported..... More than Now... and profits will no longer stay in the DR ...
I put the challenge out, to count in just one aisle how many DR products you can find there now!
I'll go back to reading n

same thing i said, except in different words. watch more and more closeout items from job lots pouring in, and watch less and less Dominican products on the shelves. apart from some beer, rum, and coffee, and some dulce de leche, there is precious little Dominican product on the shelves. when there is imported dark sugar on sale here, you know there is a problem.
The only other thing they need to close out the market is to sell used cloths from OS...
oh wait??
What was that story a while back about that?? hahahhahahaha
So el nuevo diario says one thing this morning and then another this afternoon. WTF
I guess it was all a bunch of tipical Dominican BS???????

In my business, back in the 90's, we used to restock them weekly.. Monday email of demands, with a Thurs shipping deadline. Today that policy is in shambles
The same was true of most other retailers, and never again will we plan on "Shopping till we drop" in USA
Could be that just like the cervezeria Presidente deal, the owners want some time to negotiate their tax obligations to the state.
They also emphasized that the "Pola" supermarkets are not for sale, but these where never included in the WalMart deal.
Time will tell whether the sources where correct or not, but there is a saying in Spanish that goes:
When there's smoke there's fire....
their prices on food are good but the other crap they sell u can also buy in the other stores.
