Santo Domingo.- Grupo Ramos, the owner of supermarket and department store chain La Sirena, denied it had sold the chain to the US’ biggest retailer Walmart for more than US$800.0 million.

According to elnuevodiario.com.do, the director of Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility of Grupo Ramos, Berenice Mendez, denied the rumors concerning the alleged negotiations, and pointed out that La Sirena stores have never been for sale.

Walmart signaled its intentions in Latin America by establishing in 2010 a regional office in Florida just to handle Latin America.

Today, Walmart is the largest employer in Latin America, and with a financially slowing Europe as well as growth retrenchment in China, the US retailer has been stepping up its activities in the region.

Well, Grupo Ramos has to option to sell and walk away with more than US$800.0 million or Walmart will come to the DR some day soon and give them a run for their money.

Walmart is a very aggressive US company and they will do what ever it takes to get what they want.

"Is Wal-Mart Destroying America? Facts About Wal-Mart That Will Absolutely Shock You"

America absolutely loves Wal-Mart. 100 million customers visit Wal-Mart every single week in this country. But is Wal-Mart good for America? That is a question that most people never stop and ask. Most of us love shopping in big, clean stores that are packed with super cheap merchandise, but the truth is that Wal-Mart is destroying America in a lot of ways. As you will see below, Wal-Mart has destroyed tens of thousands of small businesses and countless manufacturing jobs over the past couple of decades. Wal-Mart has become a gigantic retail behemoth that sells five times more stuff than any other retailer in the United States. Unfortunately, a large percentage of all the stuff sold at Wal-Mart is made overseas. What that is costing the U.S. economy in terms of lost jobs and lost revenue is incalculable.

"But Wal-Mart is a perfect example of where our economic system is headed. Our economy is becoming completely and totally dominated by highly centralized monolithic predator corporations that ruthlessly crush all competition and that will stoop to just about anything in order to cut costs. In the future, will we all be working for gigantic communal entities that funnel all of the wealth and economic rewards to a very tiny elite? That sounds very much like how communist China works, and red-blooded Americans should want no part of that. America is supposed to be about free enterprise and competition and working together to build up this country, and Wal-Mart is destroying all of that."

The following are 20 facts about Wal-Mart that will absolutely shock you....

Monopolies are against the law and Walmart should be outlawed. The wide sprawling tentacled liked Walmart attaching their suction cups to suffocate small business all over the world should be banned. I hope some one listens before independents disappear. In the mean time, there is a special at Walmart I want to take advantage, I am headed over there before it is all over.

Speaking of Monopolies that are against the law:

Here is one that is is devastating us right now!

So much for our Sovereignty and Economic Independence; Puerto Rico the US Colony gets a better deal than we do!

“Expert sees agencies as preventing review contracts”

“SANTO DOMINGO.-the expert in energy issues José Luis Moreno San Juan denounced that the Government cannot review contracts with electricity generators because embassies of powerful countries and international agencies hamper it.

“Moreno San Juan, who directed the Institute of energy of the University autonomous of Santo Domingo, said that occurs even though these diplomatic legations are aware that such contracts are so one-sided and injurious for the Dominican State that never would be placed in practice their countries, under penalty of having serious judicial consequences.”

Another consequence of the Neo-liberal orgy Lie-onel began in 1996!

From: United States, Fighting the Dictatorship of the Narco PLD Mafia; Guillermo Moreno President 2016

“He added that though it may be harsh to say it but those diplomats and executives of these agencies act more as lobbyists and guarantors of certain questionable investments rather than representing their countries and financing institutions”.

“Interviewed by Hector Herrera Cabral in the D´AGENDA program which is broadcast every Sunday by Telesistema Canal 11, the electrical expert warned that such contracts do not resist any renegotiation; they should be reviewed and revised.”

“He argued that it is not possible that we continue with the vicious circle that in the electrical business the population continues to receive expensive, bad service, and the Government has to annually provide more than a billion dollars of subsidies, while the generators obtain hundreds of millions in benefits each year.”

"Yet this situation cannot be reviewed because of the opposition from a small economic group which benefits, and embassies and international agencies which threaten and blackmail the Dominican Government so that such a review is not carried out," insisted Moreno San Juan.

“He called it unusual the fact that plants that in Puerto Rico kilowatt/hour is sold at six cents US to the distribution companies in that country, yet with the same costs of production and the same coal generation it sold at 14 cents US in DR.”

“He also gave as an example the resistance that has AES Andres to Cogentrix converting to natural gas for the fact that they monopolize the market for that fuel.”

"If that plant converted to natural gas in four months it recovers the investment", but that is not beneficial for those who monopolizes the market", said the expert.”

“He explained that the same occurs with the boycotts that have generators to invest in the construction of new plants that would force them to negotiate energy in conditions less onerous for the Dominican State.”

No not another PURPLE violation of the constitution!

“He regretted that despite the fact that in the country is demanding clear rules and free competition, the electricity market is monopolized thereby violating the Constitution of the Republic.”

Saint Celso not going be very happy with this one!

“José Luis Moreno San Juan attributed the failure of Celso Marranzini, head of the Dominican Corporation of Electrical State Enterprises on the fact that he only focused all his attention to the part of collection, but he neglected the aspect of generation and the review of contracts”.

“He said that despite the fact that he managed to improve payments by neglecting other nodal aspects of the electrical business Marranzini has left the sector with the deepest financial crisis in recent years.”

Walmart would be a nice addition to the islands allowing common people the ability to purchase goods at a reasonable price. Walmart would have the containers arriving daily to fill the shelves with inspected meats and other products. Simply look at the meat and chicken industry in D.R. for sanitation issues as well as other needs of the people. D.R. does not have the inspection ability to check the the industry and have the problem with bribes

Wall-Mart, Target and a host of others have destroyed the Mom & Pop stores in the US and Europe. They will eventually do it here too. And when did you find La Serena even closely competitive? I see few if any pobres shopping there. They do hire a lot of people too but without adequate benefits.

To sell or to lose are not the only options. I wish they don't sell and compete. They cannot compete with Walmart globally, but they can in the DR and maybe regionally if they adapt. Presidente was eventually sold, but they were and still are number one in the DR.

VStar650,
The "Mom & Pop stores in the US and Europe" are required to pay tax, keep books and comply with public safety, licensing, health and employment laws. In the Dominican Republic they don't. That gives them a competitive edge.
