Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic exports five varieties of oriental vegetables and two types of fruit to the European Union, which are under surveillance for pesticide residues.
Since it started exporting in 2010 the only difficulty had been with bananas, but was eventually resolved, Agriculture Ministry Plant Protection director Emigdio Gomez affirmed Monday.
He said the problem involved one German certifier which had approved the postharvest product used to conserve bananas and can only be lodged only in the peel, which isn’t edible. The country exports mangoes, bananas, bangaña (pepinillo), hot pepper, balsam pear, eggplant and green beans to the European Union.
Since April the EU began to look into the mangoes and removed it from the pesticide listings in June 2010.
The exporter had to pay a high cost for that e inspection: for each 50 boxes of fruit shipped 500 more euros were charged for the analysis and red tape.
That left five oriental vegetables in a more difficult situation because of their nature of intensive farming, increased their pesticide use.
Gomez said there were 65 positive cases in the first half of 2010, but went down for the second half of that yea; remained normal In 2011; 24 cases until last July, an average of less than four cases per month. “At first we had 20 cases in just one month.”
Quoted by hoy.com.do, Gomez said that of the five plants in the control, the European Union evaluates each one individually.
The pesticide control for bangana was discontinued last January, the removal for balsam pear has already been requested, the official said, adding in 100% of the cases, the latter hasn’t reached 5% in 2011 or thus far this year.
He said the country’s most serious case is the hot chili pepper, because of a fruit-boring weevil prompts farmers to overuse pesticides, although its control has to be preventive.

What the story does not say is that the Dominican exporters actually import quite a lot of their fruit from Haiti and prepare it for export in the DR and that further more the owners of the big fruit and veggie export business in Haina are not even Dominicans .

DR needs to copy windsetfarm.com method to produce good product for exports. Will make a killing and be certified organic for all those Euro buyers.
Greenhouse Facilities
"Our greenhouse facilities combine state-of-the-art technology and old-fashioned attention to detail to ensure optimal growing conditions.
Our sophisticated, computerized irrigation and ventilation systems help us nurture our produce to ripeness on the vine before hand-picking. We create the ideal growing conditions – giving our produce exactly the right amount of light, nutrition, water, ventilation and carbon dioxide it needs to thrive and grow, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
Growing plants in the controlled environment of the greenhouse helps us to do that. So does our integrated pest management system. We put predator insects like ladybugs, praying mantis’ and wasps to work to remove unwanted insects such as aphids.

A single ladybug can eat up to 50 Aphids a day and up to 5000 aphids in its lifetime!"
"Our greenhouse staff have received extensive food safety training. Our food safety policies and procedures encompass guidelines that must be followed by every single person who comes into contact with our fresh produce."

This certification assures buyers and consumers that the produce packed in our facilities has been handled in a food-safe manner. The audit assesses all aspects of food safety, including sanitation, maintenance, employee training, pest control programs and more."
The Farm covers some 64 acres or 50 football fields! All told, Windsetfarms has something like 400 acres. DR certainly has enough space for a few such facilities to export to Europe and to the USA.

Clean, consistent and sustainable
Windset Farms
The Santa Maria greenhouse is surrounded by fields growing strawberries, broccoli and other crops. So why have a greenhouse instead of a traditional farm?
The first reason is yield. In the case of grape tomatoes, a greenhouse can produce
about 20 times more crop than a traditional field, the Newells say. In short, a lot less land
is needed to grow a lot more produce.
Then there’s the issue of water—a precious resource in warm areas, where plants grow so
well. A greenhouse uses 25 to 30 times less water than a traditional field, and it goes right
to the roots, not into dirt, and there’s no evaporation. Also, the nutritious drink of water
and fertilizer that feeds the plants in a greenhouse is recycled to use again.
Since packing and shipping are done onsite, everything is kept within the clean confines of the facility. Even the carts, containers and packing room floors are diligently cleaned on a regular basis."
