SAN SALVADOR. - Former president Leonel Fernandez said austerity policies implemented in several European countries have led to an economic recession, the growing problem of unemployment and the persistence of the global economic crisis.

The former president’s statement came during his participation as a panelist in the Latin America and Caribbean Economic Commission’s (ECLAC) 34th Session held in El Salvador’s capital.

Fernandez said the austerity policy implemented is benefiting Northern European nations such as Germany, Austria, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands, because the euro’s devaluation has contributed to an increase in exports outside the region of those countries.

He said moreover that it’s the southern European countries which have been most affected, citing Spain, Portugal and Italy, which regardless of the measures taken to meet market requirements, it always reacts adversely , further aggravating their economic and social situation.

Fernandez said there are two blocks in Europe which have different interpretations of how to end the crisis, and said to curb the incidence of northern European nations, France's socialist government of President Francois Hollande, has ended with agreeing with the administration under Spain’s conservative Popular Party, to, through policies to promote growth and jobs leave the crisis behind.

He noted that together with an economic and financial problem of international character, the global economic and political crisis is having very strong social tensions which are being politically expressed.

They would solve the problem by getting away from the world banks that are bankrupting the world. They would need to tighten their belts if they did not have to pay interest on their loans

I think it is worthwhile looking at what he has said ,,true that austerity measures in the UK and in France have not been of economic benefit to either country ..but for both these countries they had the large expense of military operations in Libya .
But here Danilo has not really talked about austerity at all , he has talked about efficiency and reducing unnecessary government expenditure ,,,and they are two very different things.
It is customary for a prime Minister or President to refrain from making comments at least for 2 years so LF should abide by convention

@Ricardolito,

Leonel is not referring to RD, DT just tries to make it "sound" like that with their headline. Reminder, Danilo is not stoppiong investment on infrastructure that still need to be completed. El Metro and el Bulevar de la Romana are still being worked on...

Stop whining, coge pa'lante y manos a la obra!

I am rather amzed that anyone would want to be a panelist in San Salvador ...that is a another foul central american country where even the murder of Oscar Romero by the Nazi style police could not turn the country around and it is like Honduras , a country where the rich tread on the poor .

jhcl .yes I understand your point thank you and I agree with it .Danilo is not stopping investment and expanding the economy at all .

F..ing clown do you really think the economic scholars and European community gives a sh.t about your advice (coming from a Thief and Drug Dealer and they all know that).

If you and your crew had not steal so much, your country would have been a better place, and may be the Dominican Republic would not have been weighted (risk scoring) as "High Sensitive" in all major banks with the related consequences.

Now guys , being honest do you really think he is no more in charge when his Wife is Danilo's VP ? Cmon ! I guess it's another Medvedev / Poutine case. Danilo is keeping the bed hot and Ladron First will come back in 4 yrs.

Mr. Fernandez is not qualified to give financial advise, his government did not improve living conditions for the poor, it only improved the lives of government officials; they stole what belongs to the Dominian people.

Southern European countries are all corrupt like the DR and when no one wants to lend them money because they are corrupt you get forced austerity.

The DR is next to realize that the Party is over and there will be hell to pay for the out right theft by mafia Politcos and regional Mafia Dons.

A train wreck is coming and Danilo knows it. Who is going to lend you money when the DR is considered the Govt with the most wasteful spending and corruption.

Leo wants his old job back already? Couldn't get a major role on the world stage? Lets hope Groucho does such a good job, he gets more turns, until a worthy successor emerges. Leo, you've made a huge fortune and mortgaged the country's future. Enjoy your wealth and watching your ribbon-cutting movies, and as the General said - STFU!

No wonder Lie-onel is against austerity!

In case you need any more proof that Narco Lie-onel Fernandez and his CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE the PLD is ROBBING you the Dominican Taxpayer Blind here it is!

“Each DR legislator costs RD$ 23.8 million pesos”

SANTO DOMINGO.-Each Senator and Deputy took RD$ 23.8 million from the Dominican people last year, according to a study carried out by expert Ernesto Selman and Gabriela Fernández Leroux.

The amount represents an increase of more than 206 per cent with respect to what a Congressman cost the State in 2004, when cost was RD$ 8.2 million, i.e. approximately US$ 204, 000.
How many Dominican Taxpayers got a 206% increase in their wages during Lie-onel 8 year festival of STEALING?

Read the rest and get sick at:

“Cada legislador RD sale por RD$23.8 MM”

Look Little Rickey it is not Acento, this time, who you despise for publishing the TRUTH!

A serious question, josean -

how much of this orgy of spending comes from Dominican tax revenue and how much from overseas loans?

A serious rebuttal; and if that were the case, who eventually pays for those loans?

Certainly not the revenues the METRO is generating!
