SANTO DOMINGO.-  Customs director Rafael Camilo on Monday denied that there’s any ban on bales of used clothing from entering the country, but warned however that the business is unfair competition to the local textile industry and a social problem which in his view the new administration must deal with.

He said Customs is responsible for supervising and controlling to prevent the transfer of money, drugs and weapons.

In a press conference the official said the business of used garments sent from the U.S. competes unfairly with local manufacturers, and reiterated that the new Administration will have to deal with it.

".........unfair competition to the local textile industry....."

What textile industry ? Other then Free Trade Zones garment assembly plants which have been set-up exclusively to take advantage of the low cost of labor, since when does the DR have a domestic garment industry ?

We might perhaps have a few micro-businesses which specialize and serve a specific need in the community, but what industry is he talking about ?

Can somebody please explain this because I am baffled

unfair is when the USA subsidizes the operations of big, multinational agribusiness, then dumps agricultural products on other countries. i do not expect you to understand this, since it is more complicated than the Abercrombie and Fitch catalogue.

they are two different products ,,the Dominican clothing industries produce rubbish , no quality control for size or material or for stitching ,,,an excpetion sometimes is underclothes ..so there is no unfairness in decent clothing coming here

exactly, Ricardolito. to the best of my knowledge, the DR has never had a history of a buoyant used clothes trade. it is not as if the used clothes that are being imported will represent a threat to the already well established used clothes vendors. besides, these are the problems that you face when you join free trade agreements. try to ban the importation, and you could get hauled into international trade courts...not pretty.

what a crock of shit !! the real problem is imports from China. Dominicans can't afford to buy Dominican products. Simple. Same thing happened in the USA. Go to a Walmart and try to find an american made textile product. Go to Sirena and try to find a Dominican textile product. sheesh, get with it Dominicans , buy Dominican

It will never happen in DR since they think anything made outside DR is of much better quality.
