Santo Domingo.- Guangdong province Foreign Trade director Shoujian Gao said the Caribbean has a great future for Chinese tourists, while calling the Dominican Republic a complete destination with the highest standards.
"Most Chinese tourists visiting Asia, Europe and the United States, becoming a potential Caribbean as Chinese tourists prefer not repeated and discover other exotic places like the Caribbean,” Shoujian said.
The Chinese official made the announcement during a visit with a delegation from Guangdong province, invited by Tourism minister Francisco Javier García, to participate in promotional activities taking place in the town, as an exchange experience and to promote trade between the two nations.
"I think we have excellent opportunities, we promote tourism from China to the Caribbean and back, if every tourist from Guangdong who comes spends one dollar that means 100 million in simple math,” he said.
Garcia stressed Dominican Republic’s openness for foreign investment.
“We currently have around 70,000 rooms, only 14 percent operating at capacity, ensuring growth and opens the door for Chinese entrepreneurs to invest with confidence in Dominican Republic’s tourism industry,” the Dominican official said.

Most tourists come in winter, it's normal. And they mean 100 million tourists from the entire country of China, not from one chinese province. China does not let its tourists go to countries that don't have diplomatic relations with mainland China and the DR is one of those countries.

Why would Chinese tourists go all the way to the Dominican Republic when Australia is much closer, has much more to offer and without the risk of getting robbed, mugged, ripped-off or catching a disease?

The Chinese mostly stay in Chinese hotels.
Chinese tourism is like the Cruise ship industry, as in they will squeeze every cent out of them in their resorts/hotels/restaurants etc.etc. Employ only a few locals and leaving very little profit onshore.
They also travel in large groups, getting the cheapest deal and trend not to step out of the gated resort, unless on a bus with a Chinese guide to some other Chinese run activity.
The DR would have to work very hard to get these deals, then even harder to keep them. Could be a good thing if the tourist board worked a little harder...

Btw, I visit dominican resorts once a month and try to make as many friends as possible. And from all the chats that I've had I can tell that most Europeans do come back a few times but only a few of the Americans come back again, only those that have had some Dominican influence in their lives (friends, family, ex, study abroad, volunteer, etc) the rest just want to see the world.
I do agree with Stillhere, there's not much money to be made from Chinese tourists, they keep to themselves and don't even go on excursions or into town, but they do fill up hotel rooms and keep the staff employed. They're not as friendly to me as Dominican Chinese, most of the time they just ignore me.

what is the point of them just filling up a room? it costs money for that room to stay in existence. the few dollars that the tour operators pay the hotel is barely above breakeven. there is no money to be made from that type of tourism.
