Why the IMF is willing to make loans to the very same people who lied to them in the last agreement is beyond me. They stopped lending to Mejia and they pulled the last loans from LF. Medina must be awfully persuasive.

"The critical value of 150% determines which countries would fall under the initiative of Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC), which when measured by the net present value to the external public debt generated, i.e. the indicator of the burden of the debt on exports, or the ability to generate foreign exchange." "This indicator in the Dominican Republic is 656%, 4.38 times higher than critical, so we qualify as a country in the HIPC", says the document forwarded to Acento.com.do.

Josean, your ability to read spanish fluently, and your native intelligence, will do a better job than i can. the gist of the statement is that the country is severely indebted, and that the problem is most acute in the area pertaining to the ability to repay the debt. i used to tell sabelotodo that he should not rejoice over the economic distress of Jamaica, because the conditions here are not much better. i guess i was right. just like i said, 6 months ago, that we were going to need a new standby arrangement with the IMF, and all i did was to take incoming. well, i was right on that one, too. i hate to say "i told you so", but what's a guy to do?

"Alvarez Bogaert says deficit is RD$101 billion"
"Economist Fernando Alvarez Bogaert said yesterday, Sunday 16 September that the nation's deficit is closer to RD$101 billion than the RD$96 billion being quoted by businesspeople and independent economists."
"He said that in the last five years the government has accumulated a deficit of around RD$350 billion."
Now this MIND Boggling:
He added that the DOMINICAN GOVERNMENT PAYROLL is GREATER than the payroll of the REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA (population 46 million: area 1.1 million km2).
