SANTO DOMINGO. - The Russian government yesterday proposed to President Danilo Medina opening a trade route between the Dominican Republic and Russia to bring tourists to the country and return laden with fruits and vegetables.
During the nearly one hour meeting Russian Ambassador Vladimir Zaemskiy told Medina that the more than 15 flights from his country which return empty could instead return to Russia loaded with fruits and vegetables.
He also proposed bringing more Russian tourists to Dominican Republic, especially Puerto Plata. He said 180,000 Russians visited the country last year.
"There are several projects, such as exports of various fruits and vegetables, because many flights come from Russia and return virtually empty, with a large capacity to carry fruits and vegetables from Dominican Republic to Russia, not just Moscow, but St. Petersburg, the second capital," Zaemskiy said.
He affirmed that Russian agencies analyzed the items to be exported and will decide which supplies are needed.
Zaemskiy said Medina promised to analyze the proposal and issue the necessary instructions, and to meet again upon his return.
Zaemskiy asked Medina to allow a test flight from Russia to Puerto Plata, "because in that province they have all the facilities and capabilities, besides the climate, that the Russians need, and wouldn’t take away flights from Punta Cana."

Yucahu,
The only edible carrots in La La Serena are imported from California and Florida. The local carrots are like lumps of drift-wood. The local oranges are full of rot, or are tasteless and dry. Local grapefruit are almost black with fungus, and local mandarins are full of seeds. The local bananas are riddled with black bruising. I don't call that fresh, sweet or delicious. The tropical fruits are okay sometimes, terrible at other times - you take pot-luck. The only reliably good fruit like I said is imported and expensive.

While Roy may have made a valid point he is only half right. The produce grown in the DR is of great quality and among the best. Unfortunately, the majority of the top grade are exported to Europe and the US but what remains for local consumption tends to be second rate. However, that does not necessarily mean you can't get the better quality produce.
Regardless of opinion, export quality produce is available and can be found at select locations all over and through out the DR. However, I am from the Cibao known as the food basket of the DR where fresh fruits and vegetables can be found anywhere. I don't ever recall having a problem with quality and availability. Nevertheless, I can't deny, those that reside outside of this region or live a distance away from agricultural areas and must depend on large scale supermarkets can at times be at a disadvantage with regards to access to the best money can buy.

Dear co-writers,
When a country, such as the dominican republic, exports fruit, to f.e. Europe, these fruits are submit to quality control at exporting country AND at the importing country.
In many ( most ) cases, the fruits, vegetables and other perishables, which are not meeting the required standards ( which does not mean that they taste different or less ), are used in the local markets.
And regarding the Russians, indeed, how can full planes arrive and only empties return, hilarious example of ....

The good benefit from this is that some Dominicans who want to study abroad will have an oppertunity to learn in Russa besides aquiring new technologies then theres the negitive side of it all. Roy Stone doesn't shop for fruit in the DR the only fruit he's interested in is Cueros. Just another Exploiter that's all..Since you know so much Roy why don't you start a co-op and show the locals proper farming technique instead of trashing the DR so much..

Thanks, mrtibes, but I already have, be it on a very small scale, showing the benefits of composting and mulching. I have also started a pilot project to grow Acai palms. Dominican soil and climate is conducive to many high-value cash crops, however the growers lack imagination and and grow low-value crops like plantain and beans because that's all they know and have done so for generations.
