Santo Domingo.- Local producers demand an understanding between the Dominican and Haitian governments to lift Port-au-Prince’s ban on the country’s poultry products, in effect since 2008, and the recent ban on salami imports, a situation they affirm means losses in the millions.

Dominican salami exports to Haiti have plunged 85.8%, after the Consumer Protection Agency (Pro Consumer) revealed the presence of fecal coliform bacteria and low protein content.

Although Haiti officially banned salami imports on 27 July, Haitians buy small portions at the border markets, with similar sales of eggs and chickens, especially the one in Dajabón, according to Manuel Escaño, head of the egg producers grouped in Asohuevos.

He said they produce 360 million eggs annually and half of that stays in the Dominican Republic, which he affirms undercuts their value.

Jose Lopez, president of the Cibao meat processors association, said salami exports to the neighboring country have fallen. "Before Pro Consumer’s complaint we sold from 6 to 7 million dollars a month to the Haitians, but that figure has dropped to less than one million dollars on the black market," he said, quoted by diariolibre.com.

Lopez blamed Haitian meat business leaders for what he called a boycott of Dominican sausages across the border.

Deadlock could come to an end

Haitian lawmakers visited Cibao (north)  meat procssing plants in August, to verify the making of salami, sausage and other products.

After touring the factories, the lauded the quality of the manufacturing process and said they would take their observations  to the Haitian government.

The salami producers indicated on their packaging that their products consisted of beef and pork. However, no beef or pork was anywhere to be found in their contents. What they did/do not indicate on their packaging relative to content is chicken skin, chicken guts (including feces), and probably some other potted type meats. I lived in the DR for several years and I admit that I ate salami on several breakfast occasions (fried with scrambled eggs). It makes me sick to think of what I ate. I agree with the Haitians that they should purchase no salami from the DR. Dominicans should not continue to support these dishonest business people as they have already proven that they have no problem lying to their own people. 6 to 7 million dollars a month was being paid by Haitians to buy compressed chicken skin and chicken guts. Wake up guys, these lies by producers lead to death. Remember the Chinese babies that died when the milk producers were adding melanin as a protein substit.

Stay away from Salami made in the Dominican Republic. Dominicans and Haitians should protest their governments for not looking into these matters sooner.

I just don't understand , with the wealth of Hispanola being predominantly on the eastern side, why the quality of food there is so horrible. The steaks are too damn tough, the bread tastes like alkali and cardboard, cases of botulism due to poorly prepared sausages, and now the pseudo-salami is seasoned with poop. Imagine those chicken pecking at each other's poop then people eating the poop of two birds at once. Like twice baked potato....twice digested poop.

Anyway, I would probably prefer mud cookies to twice digested poop in a pretty pink tube of puke! Wouldn't you?

Back in the days china used to build their latrines above their pigpens in order fortify the hogs' food with more nutrients. We probably thought that we could just cut the hog out of the equation.
