Santo Domingo.- While retailers favor a free trade agreement with Canada noting that it benefits the country, industrialists say the Government and businesses should boost competitiveness to better use the pacts Dominican Republic has aready signed.

National Business Council (ONEC) president Antonio Ramos, who congratulated president Danilo Medina for starting talks for a free trade agreement with Canada, said if Dominican Republic forges a pact with that nation similar to the one with the European Union, it would be of great benefit to the country.

"Canada is a country whose citizens constantly visit Dominican Republic and have had exposure to local products, for which to sign a free trade agreement would benefit Dominican industries and commerce.”

He said the initiative leading to reaching a free trade agreement with that country shows the President’s interest in solving the problems facing the national productive sectors.

Objection

But for Dominican Republic Industries Association (AIRD) president Ligia Bonetti, productive sectors and the Government should prioritize improved competitiveness to take advantage of agreements already signed and shuldn’t enter into new ones in the immediate future.

She said the government should be very cautious when establishing new processes for negotiating trade agreements, since they seek to expand markets for productive sectors and take advantage of their competitive conditions, boost exports and obtain stronger social and economic wellbeing.

"A free trade agreement isn’t to provide opportunities for other countries, other manufacturing bases, if in return we don’t find opportunities to attain similar or better advantages than those we offer," Bonetti said.

"These agreements must be, in the end, the best expression of a national alliance that leads to a leap in the nation's competitiveness, creating jobs and stronger paths toward social wellbeing."

What are you afraid of Boneti that your group of people that owns companies here will lose market because of the way they do business here where they only care about how to take more and more from the locals consumers than to give in a little.

I agree with Ms Bonetti 100%-Enough is enough, the DR must stop with this constantly dropping their pants to favor foreign interests. What about watching out for number #1? I just don't get it?
Who is minding the store while the owner is gone? We are constantly putting the wrong guy at the front counter, getting robbed blind while the person in charge looks the other way.

He is right,
Screw the Dominican Consumer.

Who cares about price and quality? Lets protect a select group of Cronys and totally disregard the Free Market.

And of course by removing all competitions the Export of Dominican Products on the world market will just soar.

No tony I did not say that....You can't be so one sided. It takes two to tango, you dig?

What you forget is that DR industries pay their fair share of taxes and it is the obligation of the gov't to protect local industries to a certain extent. They can't indiscriminately allow foreign companies to flood the market in total disregard of our productive sectors. Like Bonetti said this is not exclusively about a free trade agreement to provide opportunities for other countries otherwise native industries will be at a competitive disadvantage but get wiped out from one day to the next

What must be done instead "..the Gov't and businesses should boost competitiveness to better use the pacts Dominican Republic has aready signed." The best business deal results when all parties involved come out as winners and not just one side. But I know and I am very familiar with your mentality Joe. You could care less about the other guy as long as you got your money in the pocket, fxxk everybody e

guillermone, do not waste time on a guy with a 5th grade education. first of all, there is no such thing as " free trade". the notion was invented based on the David Ricardo theory of comparative advantage, which has been rendered obsolete, by changing economic realities. look at DRCAFTA. during the round of negotiations leading up to ratification, each country was allowed 1 item that could be protected by tariffs. the Central Americans chose white maize. i have no idea what the DR chose, but they were also allowed one line item. the USA chose SUGAR, and its derivatives, including any product with a high sugar content. so, here we have ONE line item exception, the USA has 47. that is " free trade" for you.

Haiti is Canada’s largest aid commitment in the Americas, and second-largest commitment in the world after Afghanistan.

Canada’s relations with Haiti date back to this historic period . There are records of immigration from Haiti to Quebec dating from the 1700s, when both were part of the French Empire. Exchange slowed as France lost its colonies in the New World in the mid-18th century.

Relations between Canada and Haiti grew again in the early 20th century, this time between French-speaking elites in both countries. French Canadians began to replace the French and Belgian missionaries, dispersed by the World Wars, who had dominated Haiti’s Catholic community.

Meanwhile the wealthy, educated Haitian elite chose Quebec as a destination for education and immigration. These French-speaking immigrants integrated well into Canadian society. In 1964, Dr. Monestime, who had moved to the francophone community of Mattawa, Ontario, was elected as the first black mayor in Canada.

The pattern of immigration changed in the 1970s and 80s as poor, Créole-speaking Haitians fled the Duvalier dict ator ship. Perhaps as a reflection of the earlier, elite contacts, Canadian government documents have persisted in treating Haitians as a French-speaking people, even though the majority of Haitians speak Haitian Créole . A notable exception to this rule was educators; francophone teachers immediately realised that young Haitian immigrants required French-as-a-second-language classes.

Yet the larger part of Canada’s engagement in Haiti arises is part of Canada’s shift towards the United States in the late 20th century. In 1988 and 1994, Canada signed the Free Trade and NAFTA agreements, and in 1989, Canada joined the Organization of American States (OAS). These developments have seen Canada take on the role of junior partner in the U.S.’s traditional ‘backyard’.

The most visible result of this shift came in February 2004, when U.S., French, and Canadian troops removed President Aristide from office. International planning for Aristide’s removal took place in Ottawa, under the Liberal government of Prime Minister Jean Chretien . The international force installed an unelected government, which was led by Gerard Latortue from 2004 to 2006.
