Santo Domingo.- The Central Bank on Thursday said 2012 inflation was 3.91%, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), paced by higher prices on foods and non-alcoholic beverages (6.34%), transport (3.24%), education (16.25%), and restaurants and hotels (3.88%).

It said prices rose only 0.63% in December, also paced by foods, non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, restaurants and hotels, and recreation.

“Conversely, the transport group impacted the index, at -0.14 percent,” Dominican Republic's Central Bank said.

Good morning Dready,

Glad to see you again. As for Professor of Economics, I defer to those how have studied the art and science-you know, the guys from CEPAL and the World Bank, among others. So please, no more titles, god only knows how many your amigo has and look how far he's come. The boy is having issues with "AND" as a conjunction. Has he finished his GED?

Question: "what exactly do they mean by the cost of education?"

Go do the leg work on that. But if it means anything, it is the costs of all the factors that go into providing the service within a given time frame, in this case one year (2012), no?

You have a better definition?

Have a good morning Dready.

As I said, good to see you again AND stay in touch.

Dready,

As long as we keep it professional and cordial, I see no reason to continue on the wrong path.

I bid you good health this day.

And about the inflation in educational services. More demand pushing up prices? What's your take.

that would be theoretical, in part, but not realistic. firstly, what would have caused the demand to rise dramatically between last year and this year? secondly, why would an increase in demand necessarily drive up marginal costs? i can understand a productivity decrease, but that does not mean that there would necessarily translate into a severe increase in the cost of the product. it is an input cost issue, although i cannot imagine which inputs could have risen to that degree. the cost of supplies? teacher salaries? capital investment? it makes no sense, whatsoever. i would not be surprised if it is a misprint, or translation error.

I agree we don't have enough data to substantiate what is driving this inflationary pressure.

Just a suggestion, but given the dearth of good teachers in DR, I'm certain that the good ones are being paid more for their services.

well, i have heard nothing about merit increases. there is a salary scale, depending on tenure. if there isn't then there should be. the whole merit pay thing is very delicate, and with the power of unions, it is going to be very hard to enforce. then there is that matter of retirements. for every high paid teacher that retires, they are normally replaced by an entry level teacher, earning minimumsalary. that should maintain a fairly constant current expenditure number, unless everyone recieves a raise, simultaneously.

This is a really big problem in DR. Teacher quality is a BIG FACTOR in a child's educational experience. Supportive parents are important, no doubt, but teachers are crucial. I once thought it was the other way around. If only the system could get an injection of "goodwill" from people in the first world, retirees and the educated unemployed of the first world! A sort of "jump start"

But that's pie in the sky. Would be interesting to have these governments support an international effort along these lines. So many well educated people that could offer some time and talent towards a better future world. I'll rather these governments subsidize a venture such as I describe, than many of the others currently in operation. But politics are local as the saying goes.

I'll always remember my first year Chemistry course where I met the sole Dominican on the staff and he told me about his experiences in DR. Basically, a good HS in the States outgunned the Uni's in DR

the problem is that the DR waited too long to do something about teacher quality. when i went to school in the bad old days, most of my teachers were foreigners. my spanish teacher was from Spain. my principal was a graduate of Oxford. with a Masters degree. even my football coach played for Millwall in London when he was younger. but then the US dollar was 1:1 with the Jamaican dollar. now, for the DR to get teachers from Spain, they are looking at a peso to Euro exchange rate of 52:1. they are not coming for that.

I agree Dread that the wait has mushroomed into a vast multi-generational problem. So much could have been accomplished back when the population pressures were not as large as today. But there's no going back so the problems have to be addressed and soon.

I'm not yet sold on technology as the answer. Not in it's current configuration. It probably will be in the future, but there's a lot to be said for good hard work with a good teacher at the helm.

i have to agree with that. barely literate people cannot make use of high tech methodologies.

I'm no economist, but doesn't inflation relate to the cost to the consumer?
Since the majority of Dominican kids go to government schools their parents pay nothing, so we are only talking about the aristocracy that send their kids to private schools. Perhaps the cost of highly-decorated generals to drive them to school has gone up?

actually, Roy, inflation is a little more complex than simply the Consumer Price Index, since other issues such as the Producer Price Index and the GDP Decelerator have to be considered. however, you are right in a sense, since, at the end of the day, it really examines the movements in the cost of goods and services to the consumer over a given accounting period

So checké

I have seen this repetitive posting mode by many pseudo intellectuals just before they go totally bonkers!

It's a form of speaking in tongues before the nervous breakdown!
