Santo Domingo.-  Agriculture Minister Luis Ramon Rodriguez on Wednesday announced the export of more than 10,000 tons of black beans in 2013 to Venezuela, as part of the Petrocaribe oil deal signed with Caracas several years ago.

Rodriguez said president Danilo Medina is intent on adhering to the agreement, which states that Venezuela’s preferential financing of oil exports to the Dominican Republic will be paid with its black beans.

He said to abide by that commitment, Agriculture imported six tons of black bean seeds from the United States this year, because local growers didn’t have enough to cover the planting.

He said farmers were spurred to plant around 6,000 hectares in San Juan de la Maguana Valley, to produce around 20 million pounds of seed next year, to meet Venezuela’s demand of 10,000 tons.

Interviewed on Telecentro, channel 13, Rodriguez said Dominican Republic’s agro-climatic conditions give it the potential to become a leading black bean exporter, adding that the Government policy is to convert and support agriculture to help growers generate hard currency.

This agreement had absolutely nothing to do with Danilo .the various independant caribbean countries have signed individual agreements with Venezuela to buy some of the oil from Venezuela on very good terms .Part of the agreement was that there should be development of the primary industry sector so that payment could be made to Venezuela in produce. It was signed off in Leonel's period. I do not think Venezuela can go back on the agreement even if Chavel is no longer with us .

In spite of these payments, how many BILLIONS of dollars do we still owe to Venezuela.

I love how some posters here would have you believe that these beans pay for everything. B.S.

WE STILL OWE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

And that's not pessimism. That's the truth.

Ricardolito, i planned to make a New Years resolution wherein i would ignore the idiots in this site. the only thing is that they just have overpowered the place. Danilo has been President for just a few months, yet this moron victor believes that he is responsible for the Petrocaribe agreement terms.

thankfully, the management of DT has closed down membership for new applicants. i think they are going to make sure no more trolls and sabelotodos join, then weed out the ones who have destroyed the place, little by little. either that, or they are going to just get rid of the site, altogether. then, these morons will be silenced, because they would not last a day at DR1. Arketype joined DR1, and they banned him for life, after one posting.

Why would venezuela agree to such a ridculous deal . Your exporting beans in exchange venezuela bought the dominican republic only refinery . How much in currency is the dominican republic getting back from this deal.

DT How could you say more than 10,000 tons=to 20,000,000 lbs of black beans exported to Venezuela,in 2013.The 2013 just started and the unexpected could happen such as drought and plague ?You mean to say it is expected to be exported in the present year. Also don't count your chicks before they are hatched as you do the capacity of electric sector per year when half a year it is down time.

Hellborn, everyone forgot that Leo sold 49% of the refinery to Chavez, not Venezuela.

Why hasn't Leo been charged with treason already?

hellborn..you can read the petrocaribe deal on line .and then you will understand the philosophy behind it ,,it is basically a socialist idea and a very generous one where many caribbean countries have a delayed payment plan for a percentage of their oil purchases .But each country is supposed to spend that deferred money on primary production improvements so that they can supply Venezuela in due course with rural produce .It was Chavez practising his socialist principles

Ricardito:
All fine and good as long as Chavez's party remains. What would happen if the opposition ever gets elected?
That is also true to supply Venezuela with agro products since they are not farmers by nature,
nor are they industrialized since all their techs are imported from Colombia, and neighboring countries. So their livelihood depends on oil.
