Santo Domingo.- Embattled lawyer Diego Babado Torres on Tuesday admitted firing a gun at the headquarters of Dominican Republic’s opposition party (PRD) during Sunday’s shootout, and affirmed he doesn’t regret it.

He said he’d cooperate with any investigation but reiterated that he fired after seeing his colleagues being injured by gunfire from inside the building.

"I don’t regret it, what I did was defend my colleagues when I saw how they fell, and I'm willing to be investigated as often as necessary," the lawyer said, quoted by elcaribe.com.do.

Torres, after defending his hardline affiliation to the party, added that he was “preparing the ground” for former president Hipolito Mejia’s arrival to the area.

And these are the "leaders" our country needs?

What a disaster and poor show of leadership by a major political party in DR.

PLD = Super Majority Party in 2016.

"Preparing the grounds" LOL

More like hired thugs and killers. These persons should be formally charged with inciting violence and attempted murder. They orchestrated and planned these acts before reaching the arena. Armed and with intentions to disrupt and take-over the PRD building, these people have no right to be free at this time.

As for Hipolito, what can you say: proving, if ever there was any doubt, once again that he is not worthy of any National leadership role.

A ring leader for disorder and chaos to reign.

Dready,

There's a saying in America: don't beat a dead horse. You got skinned on the DR taxation question and now you want to continue on that dead issue. Look, I don't know if you and Lautaro remember it, but the World Bank, IMF, CEPAL, and others have pointed out how DR is, as a % of GDP, a LOW TAX COLLECTION AND TAX EFFORT REGIME.

Nothing that you guys have unearthed undermines that international economic consensus.

:)

Sorry, but stick to the topic at hand: the PRD and its thuggish ways.

This happens all over the world for different reasons and it is not necessarily endemic to the DR.
I have seen similar behavior manifested during government sessions in Korea, Eastern Europe, some european countries. other Latin countries and Russia. Their differences are settled with fist fights. But nevertheless, it is shameful for anyone to handle themselves in such an undignified manner. It is uncalled for and uncivilized.

What a shameful show of tribal politics. I am in denial that these individuals are Dominicans, verguenza!
Police are to blame as well, they could have had a no guns allowed policy, but instead played it safe and stayed a prudent distance away.
It is not only the PRD, or the PLD, to blame, when an episode of civil disobedience such as that happens, we shall all take responsibility.
I hope that it doesn't make the world news circle, so other countries will laugh at us.

@Generoso-Too late, I saw it last night on Univision and it will likely have wide coverage all over Latin America. Now I am not so sure and I doubt if it will reach the US Anglo media such as CNN, MSNBC, Turner Broascasting and others. But I know what you mean, situations such as this, wants to make you hide and not admit to be Dominican.

But I am not a least bit surprise to observe what had happened. A friend once invited me to attend a few of those PRD meetings. The behavior was appalling. With a few exceptions, the majority of those attending were a bunch of boisterous, crude, barrio hoods just shooting off their mouths. It was kind of comical to see them interact amongst each other, behave as if it were some sort of practice session for the role of a soon to be elected candidates. They were all aspiring and competing for a political position and it was their opportunity to stand out and shine. But in reality they were nothing but a bunch of chickens clucking at the coop.

Well, this is very scary and embarrassing, but at the same time it shows how powerful Hipolito is. That shows he has a great leadership (negative),follwers willing to do anything for him, and charisma that the common masses can identify with. He speaks their language.

And this tells you that if someone in Hipolito's cabinet give him a make over (image clean up and control) he could win next elections.
Remember the PLD did not win in the richest and most neglected region of the country, the Cibao.

Danilo has to keep doing the good work and put back the money taken away from the Cibaenos (the big taxes) into the region, other wise Cibaenos will vote for Hipolito again.

""Remember the PLD did not win in the richest and most neglected region of the country, the Cibao"".

That disoriented Wussy Leonel, placed all resources in Santo Domingo.

He went further by getting loans to make things in Santo Domingo that are unproductive.

Loans that are a burden to our future generations.

Santo Domingo needed it the uplift, no doubt, but not at the expense of neglecting the rest of the country.

It is a simple concept of fundamental economic theory that Wussy Leonel cannot understand.

Specially Santiago and the Cibao region, where taxes, production and exports is cumming from.

Most of the cities in the Cibao region are in the need of avenues to communicated their metro areas that have been growing exponentially.

Such as Santiago, Moca, SanFrancisco, Cotui, Nagua, just to name a few.

No atention in the Cibao region, dont count on votes next elections.

This is a case of the behavior of one of Hippo's burros attempting to regain his place at the PRD trough by nipping at the heels of the other asses who hold the position of feeding rights.

But, of course, there will be the controversy of who nipped first. Hippo asked the church to mediate, asking for St Francis of Assisi.

Seriously, Vargas could end up dead before the next National Elections take place. These thugs unleashed by El Burro wouldn't have any problems doing so.

The greater disgrace, and BTW it's on the BBC, is how the National Police allowed this to happen!

Some other commentators have noted this disgraceful lack of action on the part of the Police.

As with the anomalies during the Presidential elections, remember the SUV driven by one of the Mazar clan members? A general ordered it to stop and that the occupants leave the vehicle in order for a check to be done. The driver refused to leave the vehicle and then called upon a massive PRD crowd to support this his refusal to obey the law. Then that nut, "Taina the lawyer" got on top of the vehicle to scream idiocies.

Meanwhile the heat on the Real Enemy of ALL Dominicans continues to increase!

"Country Alliance publishes a paperback of the lawsuit against Leonel Fernández"

Country Alliance reported today that it will make available to the public pocket edition of the lawsuit filed by the former presidential candidate of that organization, Guillermo Moreno, against the former president of the republic, Leonel Fernández, money laundering and obstruction of justice.

The edition of the complaint will be offered to citizens via the website nomásimpunidad.com and in case you need it in printed form, may be obtained by contacting one of the offices of Alliance Country, at a cost of 100 pesos.

History

Recently Moreno filed a complaint against Fernandez and the foundation that he presides, and charged him of engaging in money laundering and obstruction of justice, for allegedly receiving donations from state contractors for his foundation.

Moreno, who was the national district prosecutor in Fernandez first administration 1996-2000, submitted the criminal complaint to the public prosecutor of the national district a case that constitutes a form of enrichment, in violation of the constitution.

The jurist and politician says that Fernandez Reyna took advantage of his status as the country's President and that he allegedly used his Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) as instrument, which, he said, received donations in exchange for facilitating works.
