The official spoke after a meeting with president Danilo Medina, but declined to provide details on the pact.

Jimenez, who said the details of the agreement will be disclosed this month, noted that since he took office, Medina negotiates with the power companies to solve the energy crisis and pay the Government's debt.

1 Billion... 3 Billion... WTF is it?

This is a (NEGOCIO DE CAPA PERRO) as we would say in the Cibao region. Even if it is turned over to private co.the distribution and generation of electricity. It takes fuel to run it and does not
pay if the gvt turns around and gives it away in form fo subsidies. Do you see any one offering
to buy it ?No because it does not pay.It is easier to sell it to the gvt in bulk and in turn have the gvt
give it away.At this rate the gvt will be in debt forever.

The public has to pay for their electricity one way or another, just tax them more!

there has been a hue and cry, in all quarters, for many years, regarding 4% for education. does anyone realize that the amount of money that the government owes the power companies, for a service that has already been consumed, is 50% of the education budget?

This is what happens when gvt subsidizes electricity. They expect others to pay the diference in
one form or another as Danilo just said, regardless the results.

Actually, those who the government is subsidizing are those who are stealing their electricity, both barrio residents and large companies. Those who are suffering are the taxpayers, the rate payers who are paying to have electricity half the time and everyone who has to deal with the daily blackouts.

This is probably not the best way to spend tax money or run an electric power business -- and it is certainly expensive. DR needs to get a handle on this if it wants to progress. I think Medina knows this. The question is can he do it.
