Santo Domingo.- At 4pm today around 70,000 people 15 years and older will simultaneously start the country’s first stage of a push toward literacy, with the National Plan "Quisqueya learns with you," in which the Government aims to teach 850,000 people to read and write in the next two years.
Literacy Task Force coordinator Pedro Luis Castellanos said the effort starts with 6,056 learning centers throughout the country, a figure that could rise to 7,000 since new groups for literacy training were being formed even yesterday.
With everyone’s help
Castellanos said neither the government nor any other institution could achieve the literacy goal for 850,000 people, since it requires "everyone's help."
He said many national alliances had to be forged to launch the National Literacy Plan, because even though the government is involved in providing what it can, "we are convinced that no institution in the country alone has the capacity to make literate 850,000 people in two years."

Everybody knows that no parent sends their kids to school this week.

No. Certainly not.
To quote the Murray Head song, ".... I get my kicks above the waistline sunshine......."
I find nothing funny about a society of incredible people who've been subjugated, exploited, and trodden for centuries. And there's even less funny about your comment/s. If you truly are a "globe trotter", then you should know better than to use those less fortunate as fodder for your own bolstering.
Perhaps your comments reflect your attitudes, but surely not mine. The RD people are deserving of far better.
Let me know how I may be able to contribute.
I am willing to volunteer, and teach 100 in the next two years.
