San Francisco, Dominican Republic.- President Danilo Medina yesterday ordered the dredging of 20 kilometers of the Yuna river to resolve the historical flooding that affects more than 9,000 hectares of rice plantations in its lower basin.

The president met with growers and members of the irrigation committee at Limon del Yuna and the Aglipo II project, to discuss and solve problems starting today Monday. Medina ordered heavy equipment to the area, to start dredging the river immediately.

New Year Greetings

President Medina will receive New Year greetings from many people tomorrow Tuesday, a tradition that dates to the late 1970s, began by the late president Joaquin Balaguer.

not very often do you see the president of a country dealing directly with their problems. I guess he doe not trust the middle guy because they turn out to be useless and for the same reason he should get rid of them and save money.

A rare sight to see a president walking the platanales and ordering the projects himself... Kudos.

Perhaps before dredging the lower Yuna , is it possible that it has flooded that way for centuries, and that is a reason the area is such a productive rice growing area? Yes, the dredging may resolve the flooding issues short term, but may have a negative affect on the fertility of the rice fields, by lessening the amount silty & nutrients brought in with the seasonal floods. Just asking ? You know what they say, "Don't screw with Mother Nature". ..

Lo que Hipopola nunca hizo.

Danilo is also getting the land ready by paying brigades to clean up the farmlands. At least this is the case in our campo.

Applause for the rolled up shirt sleeves approach. I love this guy.

I hope due diligence was done to make sure that no negative environmental impact or species extinction will be had due to the dredge. The RD holds some very rare and unique creatures.

No environmental impact study done - how Dominican!
Lake Enriquillo is unique and is far more valuable for eco-tourism than a bit of rice. Once destroyed the flora and fauna will never return.

"Medina ordered heavy equipment to the area, to start dredging the river immediately."

"The president met with growers and members of the irrigation committee at Limon del Yuna and the Aglipo II project, to discuss and solve problems starting today Monday."

So he has decided with just a discussion that dredging is the solution? No study, no environmental impact plan, just start dredging and we'll hope it works?? Or have they left out any links to studies done, that they are working off?
With out any true information the rains will come again without solving the problems and they are back to square one.. More dredging.
Why is this problem occurring?
What are the long term solutions?

Stillhere; I am in full agreement with you.

I think this is only a political move to make people believe he is doing something about it.

Yes, only in the Dominican Republic do they release carp into the rivers and reservoirs, to fvck-up the native aquatic flora and fauna, but give the voting feral peasants something to fish.

OFF TOPIC !

Look. You cannot wait for someone to do everything for you. And Danilo cannot legislate common sense or courtesy. However, the law CAN enforce the current statutes. So it's not really Danilo's fault. Yes, the buck stops with him, but look at the problems he's tackling. He surely has an expectation that others will be doing their job all the while.

Again, look at the problems he's tackling. These things took decades to foster into commonplace and apathy. Even if he does this himself, it’ll take more than his current amount of time in office to un-do.

Obviously littering is a huge problem that you all care about. Start with yourself. Maybe it'll catch on. Lots of community clean-up projects work wonders to bring awareness. Between law enforcement, and public consciousness, perhaps the job can get done without completely relying on someone else to do it for you.

That is if the law enforces the law. But oh yeah - Danilo is working on THAT too. Poor guy.
