Santiago.- Internal Taxes agency director Guarocuya Felix favors a debate on taxing online purchases abroad, as a way to prevent unfair competition which hurts local businesses.
"Law 253-12 originally calls for all transactions, including online, be subject to Dominican Republic’s tax formula. As far as Internal Taxes is concerned, we should all be playing with the same game rules," he said.
The official refuted the notion that charging taxes on Web purchases affects the free trade agreement, since in his view is an internal levy, because It’s charged only here.
Felix spoke in a meeting with the garment, footwear and accessory merchants associations, as part of a joint effort with Santiago’s Merchants and Industries Association (ACIS) to those formalize companies.
He said informality creates unfair competition, which concerns the sector that pays taxes, adding that formalized merchants lead to a better business climate and bank access.
