Santo Doming.- The Used Vehicle Importers grouped in Asocivu and Adeci, today warned that their sector is going through its worst crisis of the last 10 years, and to avert bankruptcy, they need legal security and clear rules to import autos from the U.S. under DR-Cafta.
It’s the second time in as many weeks the used car importers sound the alarm for their survival, while Dominican Republic boasts a glut of newer cars.
Asocivu and Adeci executives met with Customs director Fernando Fernández, and asked him to find options to revitalize the sector.
They said customs regulations should facilitate imports of the most suitable used vehicles, according to international treaties signed by the country,.
They added that they face critical a situation, as the result of the online purchases in auctions abroad , to the payment of taxes locally, and especially the import ban on autos older than five years.
