The middle class workers have an ally...Pepe.!
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.-  The coordinator of the labor unions grouped in the CNUS cautioned Monday that the salary increase being discussed should benefit all private and public employees as well, since the jumps in staple products and services has eroded their purchasing power, especially poor and middle class families.

Rafael -Pepe- Abreu called for a 30% increase for all public and private workers, warning that failure to do so would significantly decline the Government’s estimated revenue this year, as inflation has decimated everyone’s ability to purchase.

Management-labor talks to agree on a wage increase are expected to start within the next few weeks, but while employers say it should only cover workers who earn the minimum wage, the unions demand that those with monthly salaries from RD$30,000 to 50,000 pesos should also benefit.

The Labor Ministry’s National Wage Committee will coordinate the talks for the possible agreement, based the legal provision that it should meet every two years for labor and management to discussion on a wage hike.

i have no beef with salary increases. however, guys getting them must be made to understand the novel concept of work. i can just see their faces when the bosses tell them that they can no longer spend 7 hours playing with the blackberry.

Ricardolito, you are an economist yourself. you know that if salary increases are not met with productivity increases, then inflation is going to result.

Even though unions fight for the employee rights and help those employees get good benefits, it destroys companies for many reasons such as:
1. Union leaders usually do not have understanding of corporate finance and accounting so, they usually as for unreasonable benefits.
2. Union extend benefits to good employees and bad ones too.
3. Businesses tried to avoid countries with strong unions

Higher educated population do not require to be represented by any one because the employee earns higher salaries and benefits and know to to negotiate on his/her own.

I know that there are many greedy CEOs that pay large bonuses to themselves while the regular employees are paid minimum wages.

Also, union destroy companies and economies. Look at a Greece that is falling a part because of their sense of entitlement.

Wages should be increased across the board for low and middle income workers. While we are suggesting labor law reforms, I would offer a review of the ridiculous severance pay arrangement in this country simultaneously. While lazy workers may think it is great they can be fired and receive 3 months to a year's salary (or more depending on length of employment), it is a counter-productive statute. The threat of paying large sums for firing unproductive employees pushes wages down for all workers and takes away any incentive for employees to work hard.

agreed....wage increase...but get rid of the severance package. Those who use it most are often the most unproductive in society.
