Santo Domingo. – The United States congratulated the Dominican Republic for its transparent management of the Free Trade Agreement’s (DR-CAFTA) tariffs, according to a missive from U.S. ambassador Raul Yzaguirre to the Foreign Ministry.

In the letter, the diplomat hails the areas in which in his view progress was made in 2012, on import allocations and improvements in the administration of tariff fees.

"This was the first time that such allocations were announced in a timely manner," the ambassador said referring to the January 10 publication by the Agriculture Ministry’s Agricultural Trade Office Agreements (OTCA).

He noted that the notification hadn’t been done since March 2007, date on which the DR-CAFTA was enacted for the Dominican Republic.

At the same time, all products subject to import tariff quotas under DR-CAFTA were assigned in viable commercial quantities, which is consistent with the text and spirit of the agreement, and consonant with the provisions of Regulation No. 705-10," said the ambassador in his correspondence February 4.

So far I don't see any,but getting the shaft from Mexico, with their unilateral:telecomunication cells, cheap NOVELAS,and oil. Aside of that ,what do we export to Mexico? Not even Dominicans.
Once the DR polytechnical education gets going ,maybe we can do the same as the rest of LA except Central America and a few SA countries and have the vehicles assembled in DR so as to
create massive employments ,since labor is so cheap. if they want to sell us their vehicles.

As to the USA will always have an advantage over DR since their agriculural products are produced mechanized & subsidized by the Federal Gvt. When it comes to Central America also
can outproduce DR since their labor is a bit higher than the Haitian and don't suffer from power outages as DR.

So Ricardito, does these things answer your question? Who ever signed the DR/CAFTA had to be
on the take and must have had a good kick back, same as the mines agreements with/out reading the contract by must congress persons.

So where is the benefit ???

"on import allocations"

Said Ysaguirre, which spells benefit for who?

For the exporter (USA).

The looser, the importer (DR).

Check the trade balance of DR with USA for 2012.

USA exports to DR, in Millions of Dollars $ 7,097.3

Dominican exports to USA in millions of Dollars $ 4,365.6

Dominican Trade deficit with USA in millions of Dollars = -($ 2,731.7)

Ysaguirre has reason to be happy, he is doing his job,

Fu@$#% us all with American imports.

That is the purpose of NAFTA, making us losers.

What Dominican president signed the NAFTA.

Once again, LEONEL FERNANDEZ REYNA, that ass kissing mother Fu!@$r.

I do not think Mexico is in CAFTA ,,it is with NAFTA and I do not know why we are linked with Costa Rica, Honduras , Nicaragua ,El Savador y Guatemala ...it seems a very strange collection for us and I can only suggest that there are other matters apart from trade that have kept us there but I have never read the entire agreement ..
So the current advantage seems to be with the USA although in theory we have access to a very large market on good terms

Transparent management? If it was so good, investors from the US would be pouring money into the DR. Try litigating a CAFTA-DR violation in the the DR courts. These guys in the US State Department just want to say how they did a great job.

I am in full agreement with rokete's 2/16/13 9;16pm

Althought Ricardito corrected me and he is right (DR/CAFTA and NAFTA) are two separate

agreements in theory, althougt appears to be separate they are not. Since Canada, USA, Mexico

are all tie in , to beneffit the USA .Added to NAFTA are Chile,Peru,Colombia that have nothing to

do with the north as originated by the (3)NORTH AMERICA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT.

rokete:

Have you noticed that most all manufactured goods consumed in DR with the exception of autos

are made in China and shipped to DR via USA containers? So Uncle Sam serves as the Middle

Men to keep the cost down with cheap Chinese pruducts. This reminds me of pre ww2 Japanese

products. These are one of the reasons Chile,Peru,Colombia are looking for a direct trade with

China, and most all the Asian countries that are in need to do business with LA, Specially their

minerals, such as CHILE'S copper there by skipping the USA as the middle man.

MrThelmoAlmeydaRancier

Yes Thelmo, rerouting container, is an old shipping commercial activity for profit.

However, I didn't know Chinese products where being rerouted to Latin America from the US, on a large scale.

As you well know, the middlemen is the one making the real money, the USA in this case.

Colombia has access to ocean waters on both sides,

It would be an ideal country, for container rerouting to Latin America at a lower cost.

Becoming a member of South American commercial unions, may prove more beneficial to DR in the long run.

El reportaje asegura que el equipo del embajador Raúl Yzaguirre presionó al Gobierno de la República Dominicana para hacer valer el contrato, a pesar de las objeciones sobre sus méritos y costos.
