Santo Domingo.- The power company EGE Haina will build two coal-fired plants with a total of 240 megawatts in the town of Bajos de Haina (south), whose first phase will come online between 2016 and 2017, diarioibre.com reports.
Production of the new plants, to be built at a cost of around US$624 million, is expected to push the spot market’s energy prices downward as much as three cents the dollar.
The site to build the new plants, aimed at replacing the site’s old units, was chosen because of the infrastructure already present at the facilities, including the adjacent industrial zone, a port and the current power grid.

The energy mix or potfolio is better having a balanced approach. Coal has its place in that balance.

Was I in a long term dream?
It seems to me that about 6 months ago they were going to build 2 300 megawatt plants and 6 months before that, China was going to build huge gas powered plant and sometime before that, yet another. Do they think the public is stupid and they can rerun the same story every 6 or 8 months? Never mind. I just answered my own question.

OTOH, isn't south of Haina same thing as upwind from the to-be-developed SW beach resorts?

YES.
Cheap, efficient and Clean. Coal is the way to go for a 3rd world nation like the D.R.
Stop wasting time and money with the rip-off that is wind or solar.

In terms of cost I would go with coal since natural gas prices will only go up. If our country had money I would go with solar.

Power Production Emissions
After refining, natural gas goes to a power plant to generate energy. Burning natural gas at the power plant produces nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, but in smaller amounts than produced by oil and coal, according to the EPA. Natural gas that hasn't burnt completely releases methane, too, as does coal (see References 3). However, natural gas emits one third as much nitrogen oxides as coal, for instance (see References 1). Natural gas also produces 43 percent fewer carbon emissions than coal and 30 percent fewer emissions than petroleum, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (see References 4). Thus, natural gas is a far cleaner burning and more efficient fuel than coal or petroleum, the Union of Concerned Scientists holds (see References 4).

Coal is in a struggle with a perfect adversary: ultracheap natural gas.
With all the shale reserves unlocked by fracking, gas prices have steadily declined since mid-2008, to the point where they're hovering around $2 per million British thermal units for the first time in a decade. That's lower than coal prices.

For this cost you could have them build a more efficient natural gas power plant like the one in PERU by the owners of the power plant in Pto Pta .In this power plant nothing goes to waste thru the stack.

Josie,
Every time you call me a Fascist you just display your ignorance. I am a free market capitalist. I believe in the rights of the individual than of the state.
You, on the other hand, espouse all of the main traits of Fascism.
Centralized Economy fueled by Cronyism, Nationalism, bigotry and total disregard for the rights of the individual.
Now to the argument of Coal Vs. Natural Gas. Currently power generation is cheaper with Natural Gas but the price is volatile and subject to massive fluctuations while coal prices are historically stable.
A major power company like some in the USA can invest in both types of generation and then switch use as the price changes. A 3rd world, small nation like the D.R. will not have the luxury.
But of course you wouldn't know that because your knowledge of energy production is gleaned from the Talking points of the Huffington post.

While there is no doubt natural gas is more environmentally friendly, the cost comparisons here are probably wrong. Nat. gas is dirt cheap in N. America, and will remain so for years, but we can't access it here without a pipeline, so we have to import it as LNG and that is much more expensive than the pipeline gas in the US or Canada. That's why the gas producers are so desperate to build LNG terminals, especially on the Pacific coast. They want to export their Nat gas as LNG and make some real money again.

Coal isn't any of those adjectives. It is dirty, not cheap, finite, and bad for the environment.
Want to burn something? Instead of coal, how about the tons of garbage generated every day in major cities?..As it's done in New York City, to generate megawatts of electricity??
Garbage can become a commodity and sold to the incinerators by the truck load! Everybody and his sister would be fighting to get their hands on the precious garbage. !
The scavengers will maintain our cities and countryside, free of litter and other eyesores!
Talk about a win-win situation, eh?
