Santo Domingo.-  Santo Domingo Metro’s Line II is "a hit away" from operations and yesterday concluded the training of 250 people who’ll manage the 14 stations, from Luperon to Francisco del Rosario Sanchez avenues.

Service could reportedly start no later than mid-March, but Transport Reform Office (Opret) spokesman Leonel Carrasco didn’t confirm it, noting that it would be announced by his superiors.

Line II includes a link to the planned third line, from Quinto Centenario with San Martin, to the Colonial Zone.

"We’re well advanced on the final part, but the exact date to start is up to the superiors. We’re putting on the finishing touches to the elevators, lights, telephone systems and automatic train protection on the 14 stations," the official said.

Carrasco added that the new subway line is planned for more than 120,000 commuters per day, at a cot of 20 pesos and will receive a discount every 20 rides.

"a hit of what?"

I think the "hit" is to the pockets of every person in the DR that end up paying for the metro that services only a very small section of the capital.

Yes... I know all public transport around the world is subsidized to some extent.......

Dream,

You think if they get the PRD to throw those plastic chairs at the wall, the final "hit" will come about?

Perhaps use The Hippo's head for that final assault on the tunnel. LOL

There you go! This has everything to do with the parking problems in ZC. Once this line is built, the need for a parking structure to accommodate visitors, will cease to be. And can turn most of the area into a pedestrian mall.
If anything, this parking facility can be located away and residents can walk there. Great exercise!

RonEvane,

I don't think the original intent of the OPRET, when they came up with a metro line (L6) into "La Zona Colonial" (ZC), was to curtail the creation of parking structures around it. L6 will allow more access to the ZC, however I don't think that by itself, it will directly translate into less vehicle traffic around the area.

I disagree. The area is already busy with traffic, and no place to park. If I had a fast, clean, convenient, cheap way to get there, I'd leave my car home. Why spend an hour or two looking for parking when family and friends can be enjoying the sights, instead?

No doubt the convenience of easy transport is a pretty good incentive to go visit anywhere. Imagine passenger rail to Puerto Plata, via Santiago, that'll get you there in less than two hours! I'd go have lunch at Rocky's in Cabarete, and be back in time for dinner at home in SD!

This is a USELES Ill-conceived, Poorly Planned, Project that Steals Resources Desperately needed from the rest of the country to transport a mere 60,000 passengers, at best, with and ETERNAL ALBATROSS SUBSIDY staring at $25,000.000 million dollars a year.

A Billion Dollar Plus Boondoggle, the most expensive public works project in Dominican History “benefiting” the fewest Dominicans in History with very limited, if any, ROI for the vast majority of the TAX PAYERS!!

Joseano,
So you're saying the government is wasting around $1 dollar a day on every rider? Doesn't seem too bad to me, considering that other public transit system charge around $2 dollars per ride and still have to subsidize their train system. I wish the subsidy were only $.25, but we gotta start somewhere. If we double the riders to 120k the subsidy would come out to US$.50 cents per rider/day.

RonEvane,

Yes! For those people that live near one of the Metro stations it would be a no-brainer to leave their vehicles at home and use the Metro to travel to the ZC. But does that that don't, will still need to use some other means. For example, those people that live on Santo Domingo Este, will still have to commute on their own vehicles or use "concho" to get to the ZC. Don't get me wrong the L6 would be great for the ZC, but I still think that parking garages will still be needed. Oh! better yet, charge vehicle RD$1 to enter the ZC, unless you reside inside of it, your vehicle is designated for public transportation, or you drive around a classic American (restored) vehicle from the 50's.

So I found the subsidies for the MTA in NYC per ride:
LIRR: $7.34
Metro-North: $4.26
Subway: $1.11 per ride

In other words, a person going to work pays $2.25 fare + $1.11 subsidy = US $3.36
Plus the return home will cost the same, $2.25 fare + $1.11 subsidy = US $3.36
So the total cost of transporting this person using the Subway is $7.02 per day

In comparison, someone using the Metro will pay $.50 x 2 fares + $1.10 subsidy = $2.10 per day

Metro subsidy: $1.10 per day at 60k riders

When the Metro reaches an average of 120k riders that daily subsidy per rider will equal US $.57
And if the 250k goal is reached the subsidy will equal US$.27 per rider/day

Danilo:

You are partially correct except the subway ride in NYC is now US$3.00 for a total of US$12 or

75% subsidized. Includes+3 Municipal+ 3 State+ 3 fed per ride each way.You can ride all day & all

night ,This includes benefits to workers: vac, sick,Drs & prescribe meds, specialists, hospitals,

W/C, pensions, money left over for capital projects aside from operating funds.while DR is

limitted all around.

For the METRO MANIACS:

"The hospitals in the municipalities of Baitoa and Hato del Yaque still closed"

Both health centers were inaugurated by President Leonel Fernández, but were not equipped or completed

The only "progress" achieved so far is that it was connected to electricity, according to an official

SANTIAGO, Dominican Republic.-The municipal districts of Hato del Yaque’s and Baitoa’s hospitals remain closed, while they were formally inaugurated in June of last year by then-President Leonel Fernández.

Both hospitals were inaugurated in June 2012, within the 'package' of inaugurations that took place by President Fernández before leaving power, considered an "advancement" of the election campaign for 2016.

The two primary care hospitals, were built at a cost of RD$ 167 million, according to official figures.

Still think the USELESS METRO is a priority?
