Santo Domingo.- Senate president Reinaldo Pared on Tuesday said president Danilo Medina should submit to Congress the contract with the miner Barrick Gold for review because have the conditions have changed and the parts involved can adequately amend it.
He said the legislative chambers cannot submit an initiative to change because they weren’t part of the agreement.
"He (Medina) is the one who can, and should be so because the contract conditions change from those that currently exist, for example, the price of gold wasn’t the same as now. The conditions have changed and stakeholders can weigh a possible change , review and adaptation, "he said.
He added that the Civil Code stipulates that only the parties in a contract can introduce changes or terminate it.
"In what Congress does have power is in adherence to with Articles 94, 95 and 96, to name commission to discuss any topic of interest and for the Chamber of Deputies to designate a commission, not submit a review because it cannot, but it can call the attention of the parties involved, in this case, the President and Barrick Gold, to examine the possibility of a change," he said.

Barrick Gold will poison the waters and destroy the ecosystem in the area of Pueblo Viejo. Let’s not trade our natural treasures for money for this is the only inheritance we can leave our children. This seems like 1492 all over again, the Spanish took our gold then and Barrick Gold is doing it now.

The Spanish have caused us a great deal of misfotune... but that does not mean anything in regards to our rights as Dominican citizens, and the gold belongs to the Dominican people, why? because we are a republic, and the riches of the land belong to the state. A few thoughts...Barrick will not change the contract and the Dominican people or Government will not be able to do anything to chang that. OHHHVICTOR.... DR had the mine and could not operate it. Further more they polluted the enviroment and let it sit the for years until Barrick came in a cleaned it up. Secondly... The people outside crying for jobs.. How can you give unqualified individuals jobs that the have no clue about. Why do you think there are Peruvians, Chileans, Canadians...etc in this country. They are the ones helping to make the mine function. Dominicans know nothing about mining or construction..Look at who builds your infastructure, Power Plants, MINES, hotels. When you become and educated society and are able to handle these jobs... Then and only then I think Dominicans have a feet to stand on.
From: United States
Let me explain certain things to NYCguy:
1.-They already changed the contract first when the price of gold was going up..and it was approved by all the senators and diputados IN A RUSH.
2.-The idea of having a mine is to bring jobs and prosperity to the communities. So far , mining have being in Cotui for the last 29 years and people are more miserable than ever.A lot of riots demanding jobs and nothing will EVER happens either.
3.- No country in the world has EVER reach prosperity through mining..So, central america and the frontier between chile and argentina would be VERY rich destination
4.-In affected areas by mining no flora grows and no fauna in the next 200 years
5.- They cut fresh water supplies, the are dumping heavy chemicals and cyanide on rivers and they will be polluted FOREVER, they dont provide jobs, they dont give A PENNY to communities, no prosperity etc
So the question is ...
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING IN MY COUNTRY?

ok,NYCguy: you dont need to be an Einstein to know 2 +2 =4, there are things that you dont need to Google because it's so obvious..
In 500 years , rivers and fresh waters in DR look like regular rivers in the world. For the last 3 years ALL the fishes of the Hatillo Dam, Rio margajita,Yuma river, Maguagua River etc changed the color and were packed with dead fishes.
It was so obvious that Barrick Gold is hiring tanks to delivered fresh waters daily to affected communities.
In the photos you can see dozens on trucks and tanks working in on the premises of those rivers.
Did you know that to produce 1 oz of gold you need 4 thousand gallons of water?
Do you think Barrick Gold is importing that water from Canada?

Yeah do some research folks!
Nationalize the Mine and Send Barrick “Stold” Packing!
Now everybody loves the Chilean Neo Liberal “Chicago Boys” Economic Miracle yet a little known or talked about part is:
“The nationalised Chilean mines were kept under state control after the Pinochet's 1973 Chilean coup d'état, despite the junta's pro-U.S. leanings and this is still the case, largely because of public sentiment and because Codelco is a major contributor to the Chilean Exchequer (Treasury). Codelco pays income tax, all dividends go to the government and it also pays a 10% tax on the export value of copper products and associated byproducts according to Law 13,136.”
wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilean_nationalization_of_copper
From: United States, NJ
josean:
You are right, I read those articles about Chile and their mines.
I further learned by watching Mr Castellano at DR channel 5,that the original investments by BG
was US$2.7billions up to 2007 and claimed an investment of US$4.5 at the end of 2012,in paper only ,so as to avoid taxes. The agreement reads that the DR gvt.is not to recieve any money from them untill their investment is recuperated by them Every year they keep increasing their investments which in turn DR is not going to see any money, or maybe US$300 millions in 2017 providing no more investment is done.I also learned that this contract could be ratified by either parties, if not satidfied ,which is the case of DR.I also learned that at the time of contrat signature the gold onze was US$300 and skied rocket to US$1700 and climbing by then would be US$3000
My opinion is if the enviroment is affected ,the best thing is to terminate the contract. Since when is any mayor of a DR town allowed to collect tax?
"... because it cannot?"
So NOW the RD government gets legal?

I think you fail to realize. Barrick just started processing Gold at the mine and the government will not see and of this until Barrick recovers its investments. What changes has been done I don't think you want to see. Take a trip to Maimon..(Hen when you get to Cotui, please let me know.
How can the rivers be running red if they just starded processing?
The color of the runoff earth around those mountains has those colors.
Once you have tangable proof about your misguided assumptions.. Then I think you should speak. It fraustates me when people speak when the don't have Facts... Awaiting your response.
Just remember there are two other mines in that area..
Nop, you are wrong..
No rivers in DR have a bloody red cyanide color...not even with Rosario Dominicana..check the photos in the forum of DT that I posted..
An image worth a thousand words and will certainly clarify certain topics....
And you will see all the jobs and prosperity in the area..
You would understand WAY Better..
VIC: a question.. How do you know it is Barrick that is polluting these rivers? Just give me acutal concrete facts and I will chalk this one up to you. Just a Straight forward answer, not a google or Bing answer. Waiting in anticipation.
ok,NYCguy: you dont need to be an Einstein to know 2 +2 =4, there are things that you dont need to Google because it's so obvious..
Do you think Barrick Gold is importing that water from Canada?
.. continue
-The CEO of BG in DR admit himself that they were importing massive amount of cyanide. If you check my post you can find the date and the source exactly..
- I remember that the chemistry dept of UASD was publicly warning everyone no to approve the contract because they found huge amount of heavy metal and cyanide in the waters of Cotui around BG, the nest of some of the most important rivers in Cibao. Money talks and bs walks.
So,lets check the facts:
1.-Dead fishes and red rivers suddenly JUST around BG
2.-The CEO admision of using cyanide and mercury
3.- The finding of UASD dept of chemistry
4.-They are working and they admit they are producing gold so far: It means that THEY ARE using the water
5.-Testimony of dozen of people in the area
6.-If they deliver water to communities it's basically a tacit admission of how they are polluting the water that not so long ago was used by the community..
As I said before: You dont need to be Einstein,
7. -Narco Lie-onel and the corrupt PLD created the contract that created the MESS
I bet he is supporting BG!
Is Lie-onel supporting Barrick "Stold?"
...la verdad duele..!
So those are rumors from the back alley?
or maybe I figure out everything?
Oopppsss.. I got it ..Maybe it's Barrick Gold that is dumping red "Hawaian Punch " on the rivers around Cotui so the water taste better! Right?
Or maybe , the truth is too much for you too handle..
The fact is that they are poisoning our waters , croops and land FOREVER and they fix the contract in such a way that no dominican will get a dime out of it..
After a lot of people start going to the hospital because their rice is flooded with Yuma River cyanide , the situation will be too late to handle.
The fact is that they haven't and they aint gonna build anything, no street no infrastructure, no jobs,no hospital, no school, no NOTHING!
They are just selling empty promises or "espejitos por oro" and dominicans are the new "indians" , the most stupid people on earth..Right?
Denial ain't just a river in Egypt."Mark Twain"
Again: Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.
You are lucky enough not to be force to be display w/ your family , without a job and without the need to drink fresh water on everyday basics..
But dominicans are my people and every time foreigners try to do bad things to my people they are doing to me as well..
So let's check the facts :
1-you havent provide any name of school in Cotui,
2-you havent mention where the cyanide is coming from,
3-why BG is providing water to the communities
4-why suddenly after BG appears in Cotui there are no more fishes and a suddenly red cyanide tipical color?
5-why do you think BG CEO is wrong when he said he import huge amount of cyanide
6-why do you think uasd chemistry dept is wrong
7-why over 300 peruvian miners got intoxicated with cyanide
8.-what are the name of the streets BG build in Cotui
9.-Do you think BG is importing water to clean their mess?
etc ,
As dominican in this case ,the apathy should be a crime
Ms. Vickey TOTALLY Bi-polar;............ He attacks Barrick “Stold” yet supports Narco Lie-onel who is the VILLAIN who signed off on this EGREGIOUS Contract!
It's never a bad idea to learn a bit about nation-state rights, sovereignty, transnational law, and international politics in general before giving one's opinion about these matters. Bickering and ad-hominem attacks never accomplish anything constructive. Let's use our social media wisely. (while glaring righteously). :)
