Santo Domingo.- A delegation from Dominican Republic’s official and private sectors will attend the International Trade and Investment Forum in Freeport, Bahamas, where businesspersons and investors from the 54 Commonwealth Nations will also be present.
The Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) and the Bahamas Government will host the Forum slated from February 20 to 21.
The event opens an opportunity for the Dominican delegation to move forward in bolstering the political integration and trade with the Caribbean region, by showcasing to the representatives from Commonwealth countries, Dominican Republic’s advantages as an attractive destination for investment and tourism, and identify new markets for local exports.
Attending the conference will be Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie and other senior officials of that country, as well as the industry and investment ministers from Jamaica, Barbados and Dominican Republic, among others.
Delegations from Great Britain, Canada, Malaysia, India, Singapore, Australia, and Africa among others are also expected to attend.
Heading the Dominican delegation will be Industry and Commerce minister José del Castillo, Dominican Republic Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD) director Jean Alain Rodriguez, and Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas, president of the Roundtable of Commonwealth Countries in Dom. Rep., among others.

more going around in circles, useless time spent flying, and cheap talk. this will amount to nothing. it always has. the DR has observer status with Caricom, and they cannot get any products to enter the DR without extreme hassle. the only thing that gets here is natural gas from Trinidad, because they have very few viable alternatives. these guys should just go grab a few cold beers, and go home.

Well, before we can do business, we need to talk about it. I hope something concrete and beneficial can be realized, one never knows...
One curious fact about the DR and commerce, is that there's much potential for intensive agriculture and subsequent exportation of these products to the Lesser Antilles. I may be wrong, but the impression is that they (Antilles), are small and unable to be self-sufficient in this department.
Just guessing.

Bahamas is very close so no great charge to the economy ..but guess some people do not want the DR to explore the chances of trade even at this short distance

exploring trade is not a one way street, Ricardo. people do not like it when you want to export to them, but you do not want to accept their products. remember the cement? my friends and i have tried to import products from Jamaica, and the trade department here has never even bothered to respond to several phone calls, or emails. that does not make for favorable conditions for bilateral trade.

"Diversification boosts 2012 exports to US$9.0B ", reports DT.
I wonder what it is that DR has diversified into. This news item does not give us a clear picture of what it's reporting, as is typical of DT!
Perhaps you can help us out with some insights here, Dread.

i have no idea, Ron. how much innovative diversification can there be ? maybe some new agricultural products? i have no idea what they are talking about. i don't think they do, either, but it makes for good copy.

I believe the diversification has to do with organic agriculture and non traditional (Coffee, Sugar, Cocoa, Tobacco) product exports.

It was an academic study. The conclusions might hurt some people's feelings, but that's why we have an "open society" and value Freedom of Expression.

There are dozens of honest people in the country right now that want to export products. (I was one at one time) But the barriers set by the government make it impossible, without paying off a long que of people. The government need not send anyone anywhere, like, one looking for love, the answer is usually right in your own backyard.
Stop the corruption, put away 99% of the politicians, bring in those qualified who want to help, and the country will prosper

Corruptman, I intend to produce and export stuff. If anyone gets in my way, I will make him/her an offer not to be refused. I will make them a partner in my business.!
I could probably give out up to 5% of profits. Eventually I'll figure out a way to eliminate the SOBs by getting other SOBs to stomp on them.
