Santo Domingo.- Former President Leonel Fernandez said Thursday that the country has tripled its capacity to generate wealth in the last eight years, which in his view is evidenced by the construction of bridges, roads, hospitals, schools and other infrastructure.
"In the Dominican Republic, in 2004, the ability to generate wealth in our country reached 19 billion dollars and in 2012, at the end of my term, was nearly 60 billion dollars," he said to launch the "Innovative Teachers" at the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).
Fernandez said there was also growth throughout Latin America, mostly from raw material exports, for which there’s a need of knowledge to transform production in the future.
The former chief executive, accompanied by Education minister Josefina Pimentel, stressed the importance of "Innovative Teachers," a global initiative of the Microsoft Corporation, which he affirms will allow Dominican education to revolutionize.

Roy, "capacity to generate wealth tripled in his 2 terms"
The fruits are still developing but if things go more or less according to plan, the DR in say 10 years will be much more prosperous. Of course, that doesn't mean that the rich will not get most of the benefits. The real struggle will be to address the concerns of the many and that's why Medina has been in discussion with Lula and what Lula accomplished while in office in Brazil. A similar attempt is being initiated in DR. Will it work? Only time will tell.

Speaking of NOT being too swift, the old Dready goat rears his head.
Perhaps GDP growth does have some positive correlations:
"The causation here is double: high GDP growth and high GDP level mean more and better jobs and therefore higher incomes, and also a larger tax base allowing the government to do more for the poor. Conversely, people who are relatively wealthy tend to have higher human capital which is good for growth. More here.
The correlation between poverty reduction and GDP holds for absolute poverty, but not for relative poverty. Economic growth doesn’t seem to reduce relative poverty"

GDP and the resource curse
Countries with lots of natural resources tend to do worse than countries with less resource wealth, both in terms of economic growth and in political, social and human rights terms. We see that countries which own lots of natural resources such as diamonds, oil or other valuables that are found in the ground, are often relatively poor, badly governed, violent and suffering from gross violations of human rights."

GDP and economic freedom
Economic freedom means the ability to make voluntary transactions and personal economic choices, the freedom to compete, and security of privately owned property. This is the definition of the Fraser Institute. This institute tries to measure the degree to which the policies and institutions of countries support economic freedom. Their index measures:
size of government
legal structure and security of property rights
access to sound money
freedom to trade internationally and
regulation of credit, labor and business.
They conclude that economic freedom has grown considerably in recent decades and that economic freedom is correlated with income.

GDP and democracy
Cross-country analysis shows a weak correlation between democracy and economic growth:
The correlation is weak because there are numerous authoritarian countries that have strong growth figures. Most notably China of course. However, those countries shouldn’t be viewed as typical: there are just as many authoritarian countries with very weak growth figures:
Furthermore, it’s also relatively easy to produce good growth figures when the baseline is very low, as was China’s some decades ago. In such cases, neither the presence or absence of democracy does much to promote or stifle growth.
The correlation between democracy and GDP is stronger when we look at the level rather than the growth of GDP. Here’s the correlation for a sample of countries composed of Austria, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, France, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the UK, and the US:

GDP and education
The following graph shows the correlation between GDP per capita and education (more specifically enrollment rates in secondary education):
Correlations do not show causal links but it’s likely that the causation works both ways in this case: higher GPD per capita means better education (because of more investment in education) and better education means higher GDP because human capital is an important cause of growth.
the education level is dated in 1900, showing how strong the link between better education and GDP is over time. Better educated people have better educated children and so on, and this chain of education has long-lasting benefits for growth.

GDP and the environment
This curve shows a U-shaped relationship between per capita GDP and the quality of the environment. Measures of the quality of the environment do indeed fall in the initial stages of economic growth, but this trend turns around at about $5.000 per capita GDP, with many measures of environmental damage showing improvement from $8.000 onwards (source).

GDP and happiness
We establish a clear positive link between average levels of subjective well-being and GDP per capita across countries, and find no evidence of a satiation point beyond which wealthier countries have no further increases in subjective well-being. We show that the estimated relationship is similar to the relationship between subject well-being and income observed within countries. Those enjoying materially better circumstances also enjoy greater subjective well-being and ongoing rises in living standards have delivered higher subjective well-being. Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers (source)
This study, based on two cross-country happiness surveys (one by Pew and another by Gallup), found that richer countries are happier than poorer ones, and that this is reflected internally in countries (rich people are happier than poor people). No surprise perhaps, but an additional reason to fight poverty, on top of the reasons linked to under-education, ill-health, lack o

Now for some REAL Economics.
It’s possible that developing countries – those with most growth still ahead of them – tend to see inequality grow as their economies grow:
The classic theory on how growth affects inequality maintains that there’s an inverted U-shaped relationship over long periods of economic development. As emerging economies grow they initially become less equal as the few with high financial endowments profit off of their ownership of key productive resources, like land. Then, as industrialization evolves, much more of the population has the chance to participate in higher value-added work which reduces inequality.
In this argument, growth determines inequality: first it increases inequality and then gradually reduces it. But one can also tell another story, in which inequality/equality determines growth. Take this study which argues that, in general, long consistent spells of economic growth are correlated with low levels of income inequality:
Written by: Atabey, 22 Feb 2013 1:06 PM
From: United States, NYC
A growth spell in this graph is a period of at least five years that begins with an unusual increase in the growth rate and ends with an unusual drop in growth.
It may seem counterintuitive that inequality is strongly associated with less sustained growth. After all, some inequality is essential to the effective functioning of a market economy and the incentives needed for investment and growth … But too much inequality might be destructive to growth. Beyond the risk that inequality may amplify the potential for financial crisis, it may also bring political instability, which can discourage investment. Inequality may make it harder for governments to make difficult but necessary choices in the face of shocks, such as raising taxes or cutting public spending to avoid a debt crisis.
Written by: Atabey, 22 Feb 2013 1:07 PM
From: United States, NYC
Or inequality may reflect poor people’s lack of access to financial services, which gives them fewer opportunities to invest in education and entrepreneurial activity. … societies with more equal income distributions have more durable growth. … a 10 percentile decrease in inequality (represented by a change in the Gini coefficient from 40 to 37) increases the expected length of a growth spell by 50 percent.

Innovation as a proxy for wealth creation gives us this interesting nugget.
GDP and innovation
Innovation and particularly technological innovation are well-known drivers of economic growth. The Global Innovation Index (GII) ranks 141 countries across more than 80 metrics of innovation. Compare these rankings to GDP and you get this:
Bingo! It's also a positive correlation! However, nothing is 100% and there are examples of countries that manage to have Under-performed given their GDP per capita in PPP$.
Interesting that the Dominican Republic performs better on the GII score versus GDP per capita in PPP$ than Jamaica. But as I've stated numerous times, The Dominican Republic is trending upwards while Ja' has been going down the chute these past 40 years.

Leonel is not without flaws but he did open up the market to investment and increased GDP in the process. He also invested in long term projects that modernize the country (highways, metro, etc..). Has the increase in GDP trickled down to the all? No. However, the DR is in a unique situation where its neighbor Haiti, is very poor and many Haitians eventually become Dominicans so there will always be a high level of poverty in the DR. The island has 20million people to feed. This large population is a curse and a blessing.

Even if it is why did Lie-onel allow his open Border policy for 8 years?
............Because his economic "policies" cannot provide for the Super Corruption he and the PLD enjoy without Haitian Cheap Labor!
What would you expect him to say.
The truth?

One example Please where these "alleged expansions" benefit the average Dominican?
In truth, he did prosper the nation better than Hipolito, et, al, would have. But he also prospered himself and cronies more than anyone could ever suspect.
It's high time to audit his wealth and that of all his fellow thieves!!
RonEvane,
You’re getting better every day; FORENSIC Accounting!
It's called "live and learn", Josean. I thought the world of Fernandez but now realize how wrong I was to think this guy as an honest fellow.
Hope I won't be saying the same about Medina four years from now. So far, I like the direction he's taking us in.
Hopefully, Medina will do the right thing and be worthy of re-election for a second term. So far, the perception is of honesty and the desire to right what his predecessor did wrong.....We'll see.
Pssss..
If it wouldnt be for Leonel , Josie's ano would be riding a mule like Hipoloco said once before..Such ungrateful!
At the end of the road, he has done more for santo Domingo that the last presidents in 40 years..
Por sus frutos los conocereis..
Leonel 2016-3000!
Ron,
You and Dr. Dread among others are giving him the benefit of the doubt and boy do I sincerely hope you Guys are right and I am wrong!
But I got to be honet, I just don't think he will be any good!
Maybe if Lie-onel faces a legal proceeding weakening him more, then maybe Saint Danilo will assert himself and break free of the Lie-onelistas, absent that I think he is just keeping the seat warm and going through the motions Lie-onel allows him to do.
PS
But if he turns out to be FDR I will be the first to apologize to you and Dr. Dread!

You have to be a Hugh Jasol to still speak well of LF, or believe anything he says.
The only thing he did was to turn the free zones into parking lots. A ghost town has more going on then the free zones today.
However, no sustainable employment nor more equitable wealth repartition was achieved.
Failed state, save the oligarchs and the politikerist class that grew like a cancer.
Terminal.

Rest assured. Lie-onel and his voluptuous, (yummy), wife are a relic of the past.
Most of us Dominicans may be illiterates, but we know a good thing when we see one.!
The consensus (by the 80% approval rating), from all social strata, is that Danilo has raised the bar and will keep raising it beyond Leo's reach.
If what's been happening lately is any indication of things to come, Danilo is THE man, until someone can top his proficiency.... Which, in the horizon, seems to be someone who looks, amazingly, like Groucho Marx!

Only time will tell.
it amazes me that Danilo is supposed to be an economist, and he makes a statement equating GDP growth and wealth creation. that is shocking, actually, i stand corrected. it was Leonel who said that. well, we can forgive him, because he just in't too swift."
Venezuela???
Economic freedom means the ability to make voluntary transactions and personal economic choices, the freedom to compete, and security of privately owned property. This is the definition of the Fraser Institute. This institute tries to measure the degree to which the policies and institutions of countries support economic freedom. Their index measures:
size of government
legal structure and security of property rights
access to sound money
freedom to trade internationally and
regulation of credit, labor and business.
They conclude that economic freedom has grown considerably in recent decades and that economic freedom is correlated with income.

The TWO -GDP GROWTH AND WEALTH CREATION--ARE POSITIVELY CORRELATED.!!
Growing a nation's GDP enhances a nation's WEALTH CREATION.
Or we can see it another way: Take as an example a nation that performs very poorly over say an extended number of years on GDP growth and let's see what happens to their WEALTH CREATION.
By George, we have such an example in our own Caribbean: Jamaica!
Over the past 40 years or so, Jamaica has produced something close to .9% average growth rate in her GDP. And what dear old goat Dready has been the result?
A flourishing national economic? Great Wealth creation?
A NATIONAL DISASTER of the FIRST ORDER is what's taken place in Jamaica over these last 40 years!
Ever since Manley took over Jamaica in the early 1970's, Jamaica has gone down the chute.
This how Lie-onel and the SUPER Corrupt PLD Triples the Wealth for THEMSELVES!
“Relatives of the Director of the Indrhi on payroll; More than one hundred get paid and are not working”
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic. Nepotism, the lack of transparency and the use of the resources of the State for personal issues, are some of the irregularities found in the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indrhi) in the CURRENT ADMINISTRATION, directed by Olgo Fernández Rodríguez. The revelation was made by the program The Report, produced by the journalist Alicia Ortega.
Appointments made between September and November 2012, shortly after that Fernandez Rodriguez was appointed director, include both relatives of his and his wife Sonia Aguero Morales.

Up to 300% increases in the salaries at Public Works
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic. At the beginning of his administration he was lauded as the best current Government official, however just five months after being sworn in, things take a sour note to the Minister of public works, Gonzalo Castillo, who has received strong criticism for wage increases that reach up to 300 percent for some employees.
This occurs when it is assumed that public institutions should follow an austerity plan ordered by President Danilo Medina.
And this so called “BEST Official” imagine what the Bad ones are Doing!

Or inequality may reflect poor people’s lack of access to financial services, which gives them fewer opportunities to invest in education and entrepreneurial activity. … societies with more equal income distributions have more durable growth. … a 10 percentile decrease in inequality (represented by a change in the Gini coefficient from 40 to 37) increases the expected length of a growth spell by 50 percent.

you think atabey knows? he just saw an article that he could copy and paste, and it looks like something that will make him look intelligent.
The TWO -GDP GROWTH AND WEALTH CREATION--ARE POSITIVELY CORRELATED.!!
you need to stop getting your information from wikianswers and squidoo. you need to go learn the subject matter before you elect to fence with people who have. explain to me , Atabey, the POSITIVE CORRELATION between cashing in savings bonds , buying a nice set of furniture, GDP growth, and wealth creation. knock yourself out. since the equation is
GIW= GDP = Wealth not included in GDP - Capital Consumption- Loss of Wealth and Capital Destruction +/- Flow of Wealth or Loss of Wealth by Net Exports.
where GIW is growth in wealth.
show us where there is a POSITIVE CORRELATION, in all possible scenarios of GDP growth.
as i keep telling you, you are not equipped to fence with me. you might think so, but reality says otherwise. now run away.
