Santo Domingo.- In the backdrop of debates and protests over the operations and contracts with Canada based miners Barrick Gold and Xstrata Nickel, Ottawa’s Foreign minister John Baird visited president Danilo Medina Thursday, and met in the National Palace behind closed doors.
Quoting unnamed sources, Efe reports that an official press release and wasn’t issued at the express request of the Canadian Government .
Baird, who met with Medina for around 30 minutes, is on the second day of a visit to the country as part of a tour of Latin America, was accompanied by Canada Ambassador Georges Boissé.
And although the Canadian Foreign Minister visited several government agencies in the Dominican capital, sources said the local media provided scant coverage.
The visit comes while many sectors call on the Government to renegotiate the contract with Barrick Gold, to reflect gold’s current record prices, and environmentalists reject Xstrata Nickel’s plans to exploit the Central Mountain site of Loma Miranda.
