SAN JUAN DE LA MAGUANA, D.R. - President Danilo Medina on Friday said he’s embarked on a process to transform Dominican Republic’s agriculture, for which he’ll visit different provinces to meet with farmers and producers every week.
Speaking after launching a program to change the normal farming process to the greenhouse system at a cost of RD$12.7 billion, Medina said he has the political will to transform San Juan province into a major producer despite its rampant poverty.
He announced the installation of greenhouses higher than 10 floors, to conserve products from San Juan. "This project is voluntary, no one is obliged to produce, but I am sure we will make San Juan an exporting province."
The conversion process, which according to the president, could last around 10 years, will start with greenhouses of 500 square meters each, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funding of US$250 million, to be disbursed in 10 months.

Just recently read how Central American countries get something like 10x more coffee from their acreage than the DR! These developments, industrial green houses, save enormous amounts of water and provide for better food maintenance while cutting out a lot of pesticide and unwanted losses.
