Santo Domingo.- The spokesman for the deputies of the conservative Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) on Tuesday said president Danilo Medina can force Barrick Gold to the negotiating table, as the late president Joaquin Balaguer in 1986 halted Falconbridge’s ferronickel exports until they agreed to review their contract.
Ramon Rogelio Genao said by decree, Balaguer stopped all ships at port ready to export the ore, which he affirms forced Falconbridge to renegotiate the contract and obtain 50% of the profits.
Speaking before the full floor of the lower Chamber, the lawmaker said the state cannot give away its wealth to foreign companies under the "tired argument" that the nation’s legal security must be preserved. "In the name of legal security gold cannot be traded for mirrors as the colonizers did, as some ambassadors seek to continue."
The also general secretary of the PRSC called Barrick Gold’s contract to exploit the Cotui mine "leonine" because of the "insignificant" long term benefits.

ohhhvictor, ooonly in Santo Domingo. A lot of the rest of the country couldn't get a two lane bridge over a creek, even when the original was washed out. The end is in the paying for this entire attractive infrastructure in Santo Domingo. Do we really want this magnet city to suck up all the business, investments, and population? I for one am against making one city the exclusive focus for an administration charged to do well for the whole country.
