Santo Domingo.- Mining Agency director Alexander Medina on Friday denied affirmations that Xstrata Nickel’s planned mine at Loma Miranda would harm the region’s ecosystems, and said the company Barrick Gold should pay more taxes because it’s profiting more with gold’s higher price.

He said Loma Miranda counts with 18 million tons of metal and its extraction will allow Xstrata Nickel Falcondo to compensate for the scarce production he affirms it’s getting from other sites, and operate profitably in the country for 20 years.

The official said if the government rejects Xstrata Nickel’s request to mine Loma Miranda, the company will leave the country in three or four years because the sites Caribe in Constanza and Peguera, in Bonao are too depleted to pay the extraction costs.

Medina, however, affirmed his agency defends only the country’s interests and noted that the Loma Miranda is a case authorized in 1965 and ratified by the state in 1969, when Falconbridge’s obtained the definitive rights, now acquired by Xstrata Nickel Falcondo.

Interviewed on Color Vision, Medina said the company’s proposals to mine Loma Miranda have been satisfactory, but "some people and institutions are demonizing the project saying that it will cause environmental damage."

Citing the Academy of Sciences, he said Loma Miranda’s 26 square kilometers has a 4-kilometer mineral deposit located west of the hill, where there is no river.

Typical corrupt Dominican mentality renegotiate the deal after it is already done thinking you can get more for what was already sold.

The DR should get more as a result of the increase in the price of gold, since it is as a result of Lionel's international initiatives, isn't it?

Roy:
As long as I remember the gold value has not decreased. It has always increased.
As a result of gold value increase yes,all that should have been in the contrat .Except the DR gvt is either too stupid or looked the other way to start the negotiation at the time it became part of the present company, as a result if there is no clause that stipulates such transfer of ownership to re-open negotiation, then they are stuck with it. DR should read before signing any contrat. That is why they call it a contrat.

Absolutely, Thelmo.
Correct me if I am wrong, but there has been no change of government since the contract was signed, and even if there was, re-negotiating the contract was not part of either parties platform so they have no mandate to change it.
I wonder, is there a clause in the contract stating Barrick must not make public, the terms of the contract?

The treasonous Minister of Mining will be called on the Carpet for defending Barrick "Stold" and stabbing in the back the Dominican People who pay his salary!

For reasons unknown or leave no doubt the gvt official at that time did not want the agreement between the two parties to be published ,afraid Dominicans would sceram. To leave no doubt
maybe Josean would get some pressure with his connections and get it published at everyone
satisfaction.

Interesting philosophical point, Thelmo, how is it " theirs"?
These feral squatting peasants could never extract this metal, or even know its there, on their own.

True statement ,when i refered to theirs posesive as a campesino farm owner for generations and along comes a Capitaleno w/o scruple just because he just got a political position and decides to relocate them by force because the So call State needs it for mining without giving him another equal place to raise his farm products, why not let the mining co go thru a real estate dealers instead of birdbrains politicians who are after money regarless the country outcome.
Or pay him what he otherwise would get thru generation had he stay. When you say "squatters"
you must be refering to Haitians that own nothing and are there as hired hands. At any rate if they
want the land that amouts to 5kms by 5kms let them pay what it is worth to the owners directly the way it is done in any civilized country, thru negociation. You don't see the US gvt getting into real estate business.

Has ANYONE HERE specified that this clown that is now a Minning director or whatever he choses to call himself, SPEND MORE THAN 30 YEARS woking on the falconbridge, now known as Xtrata??? DO i have to say More regarding to the subject?

Xtrata can pack AND GET THE F@CK OUT OF HERE!! but we all know THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN, Loma Miranda CAN NOT BE turned on what they OTHER stuff these people have touched ALREADY has turned!!

An important point is that in many countries (including Australia), when you "own" the land (residential, commercial, farming, whatever) you do not "own" the mining rights to what is beneath your property, and if you investigate it, you may find some mining or mining-exploration company does. Also if a creek or river flows through your property, you may not have water rights either.

Mr. Rancier this may shed some light!

“There are 19 items that justify voiding the contract with Barrick Gold, says environmentalist”

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic. Geologist Luis Carvajal said Monday that there are 19 elements that warrant canceling the contract with Barrick Gold, which means that the Dominican State should ban the export of gold until everything is properly discussed.
