Santo Domingo.- Public Health minister Freddy Hidalgo on Tuesday announced improvements in 16 hospitals in infrastructure, equipment and human resources, at a cost of more than RD$300 million.

He said there’ll be a call for tenders to build what will be "the new modern Eduardo Aybar (Morgan),” hospital whose first stage includes maternity and pediatric wards.

The official said the measure also aims to reduce maternal and child mortality, improve hospital services.

Speaking in a National Palace gathering on maternal and child mortality, Hidalgo also announced the inauguration of the South region’s blood bank in June to ensure quality cases that require it.

The official cited advances in the health sector, and announced the delivery of 50 ambulances in the coming days.

He also announced the partial opening of the intensive perinatal care unit in the La Altagracia Maternity hospital, with modern equipment to simultaneously attend 70 newborns in difficult conditions."

Finally, we are going to tackle the chronic health care issues. Let's stand behind this initiative through periodic auditing and monitoring; establish timelines, and suspense in the accomplishment of each one of these milestones and phases. Let’s not just concentrate simply in “cosmetic re-structure” more importantly in good, quality care.

Use the JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) standards. Clearly define (educate the folks) in the different types of care: ambulatory vs. inpatient MTF(Medical Treatment Facilities).

I think Haiti should contribute to this fund as we provide free health services to tons of Haitian citizens.
