Santo Domingo.- The Foreign Investment Businesses Association (ASIEX) on Thursday said the rule of law is guaranteed in Dominican Republic and despite the world media’s interest in the Barrick Gold dispute, they’re confident it will be resolved.
ASIEX president Salvador Demallistre said there’ll be no problems as long as a balance is kept on how things are stated. "We do have evidence that the issue of Barrick Gold is being looked at abroad and, in that sense, it has to be handled in a well balanced, strategic manner, to keep it from doing more damage, that is, that the cure isn’t worse than the disease."
He said the way the government has been handling the case prevents "the blood from reaching the river" and the Canadian embassy and Ottawa's intervention show an interest to resolve it in the best manner, "and the ASIEX also hopes that it will."
The business leader doubted that a supposed international arbitration allegedly sought by Barrick Gold would materialize, since in his view the two parties take the issue to that extreme, as evidenced by their talks. "We’re confident they’ll agree, that’s what we’ve been able to discern, from both the government as well as the company."
The ASIEX President spoke during the dialogue "Perspectives of the Dominican economy and its implications for business" by economist Bernardo Fuentes, at the restaurant El Olivo, hosted by MAX Insurance underwriters.
More investment in the country
Demallistre said the tourism sector attracts the biggest share of foreign investment, followed by a current boom in mining, energy and communications. He noted that it’s premature to assess its impact at the start of the year, because there are expectations to be fulfilled to boost investment. "We’re confident however as some of our partners have shown an interest in investing in the country, so this year we’ll very likely surpass the pace of previous years."

The Last Thing Barrick "Stold" wants to do is go to an International Forum, hence the Kangaroo Process the Canadian Government is trying to manipulate!
So we should Call their bluff, but then Again Lie-onel will not allow Saint Danilo to do so as “Only Conceptualizer” and the PLD will be also exposed!

It will deter foriegn investment for sure. Anytime people see problems with a company doing business overseas people think twice. Another message that people will realize how stupid and corrupt our government thinks everyone is.

It may not deter "smash-grab-and-run" companies, but those in operations like gold mining, requiring substantial and long-term investment, will be deterred.
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
I disagree with RoyS ,,I imagine that the those companies who are now prospecting for gold are now aware that the contracts they sign must be equitable ,,There are thousands of foreign companies operating in the DR without contractual problems so I doubt if the one or two companies who have somehow sneeked through a contract that is deliberately unfair will deter others ..

So are you going to give DR the proper share of 15%.?

Ricardolito,
There's a big difference between prospecting for gold and actually mining it. Mining rights can be bought and sold like any other commodity. Some prospecting companies have no intention of actually mining.

Danilo,
Where did the BG bribes get the officials that signed the contracts? Oh, that's right, richer and without any reprisal or fear of reprecusions, as usual. So when the next BG or any other foreign investorship with self-serving interests comes down the pike, in whatever industry that may be, there will be a ready governmental leadership just waiting to sign over the countries interests for their own economic benefit. If you want contractual equity and appropriate representation in drafting foreign or domestic business agreements you have to make accountable those who so happily sell out their entrusted positions, giving them carte blanche, as always will not help stem the tide of unbalanced business practices. By letting the corrupt political leadership responsible for these disasters go unpunished and allowing them to keep their ill-gotten financial gains and their political "good standing" will only ensure the continuation of these duplicitous contracts.

When will the Great and Only Conceptualizer Narco Lie-onel explain to the Dominican People why he felt a 97/3 contract in favor of Barrick "Stold" was better than a 53/47 contract in favor of the Dominican state?

Brother Jo,
I really thought that the BG political fiasco could be a watershed moment to rally the Dominican people against status quo politicians of any party who wish to use their mandates and elected positions as a personal financial wealth system. This matter should extend beyond the politics du jour and party affiliation sentiments. Alas, such political alignments run too deep that even the most egrigious acts of treason and treachery fall upon political lines, same as most everything else. Now the wolf is being blamed for being the wolf and not the keepers of the gate that not only let in the wolf but provided him with the cutlery to feast upon the slaughter. As long as the political faithful continue to provide the necessary cloud cover the ruling establishment of whatever party is in charge will continue unabated in selling out the interests of the people. LOVE your country ALWAYS and your political establishment only when it deserves to be.
