Santo Domingo.- In 2012, the Dominican Republic exported about 300,000 tons of banana to the European Union nations, making it their main supplier, according to Ekaterina Krivonos from the Trading and Markets Division of the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO).

Last week, during the "Towards the Development of a Sustainable Strategy for the Dominican Republic's Banana Market" workshop, she said that the Dominican Republic's share in the export market for this item is quite important for a small country.

In her lecture titled "The Current Situation in the Global Banana Market", she stated that, compared to 2010, global exports of the crop increased by 7.7% in 2011.

During the meeting that is part of the United Nations Program, "Strengthening the Banana Value Chain through the Growth of Inclusive Markets" and which brought together producers and exporters, Krivonos pointed out that 80% of world exports come from Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 2000, the Dominican Republic only exported 50 thousand tons of bananas to the EU, she said.

According to Gero Vaagt, FAO's representative in the country, the Dominican Republic's banana sector is not very strong; it has a low productivity and weak producers' associations, which is why he suggested better coordination and cooperation between banana producers.

We are exporting over US$50mns of organic bananas to Germany,up from the Noth region of DR.

That was the reason they didn't want a coal power plant build in MonteCrrisi, since it will affect the

banana production in the Organic Stage,at prefered rate. That is one of the reasons you don't see

DR bananas in NYC ,giving the preference to the Central American countries at much cheaper.

once again, it is a problem of a great opportunity ruined by bad execution. a Dominican poster in this site remarked about the quality of the bananas from the Eastern caribbean, compared to those of the DR. DR bananas are every bit as good as any in the world. the problem is quality control. of the numerous tons exported, very many are rejected because of the condition in which they get to the destinations.

Are you sure it's because of execution or because Europe pays more for our bananas than the US?

Danilo, hit it right on the head.Europe ,specially Germany has prefered price on the DR Organic
bananas and are definitley handled better.

In reference to the above article from you.Could be so from diferent localities, but not from POP
What might definitley affect the export to Germany of the Organic bananas would be the construction of the coal power plant in Manzanillo. They have worned us last year when the Chinese wanted to build one there.
As Dominicans ,you know they will kill the goose that gives them golden eggs.Anything for a
commission(kick back).
As an example of their stupidity...The person incharged of the METRO construction of the 2nd line
was quoted as saying the DR 2nd line only cost US$1,600 mns with 30 stations as opposed
to the one in Panama at a cost of US$1,900mns with only 15 stations. What he failed to tell the
public was DR used slave workers as opposed to Panama.
