Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Thursday announced the sale of US$1.0 billion benchmark bonds due in 10 years at a 5.87 rate, the country’s lowest ever.

He said the bonds show foreign investor confidence in Dominican Republic’s economy.

Dominican Republic’s previous access of international debt markets occurred in 2011, when it raised US$750 million.

According to Bloomberg, Citigroup Inc. and Deutsche Bank AG are arranging the benchmark transaction.

Record offer

Finance minister Simon Lizardo, who led the Dominican team which negotiated the transaction in New York, said the offer sets a record not only for being the country’s highest issue ever, but also the lowest rate since the country returned to the capitals market at the start of the last.

He added that initial demand of more than 6 billion dollars was six times the amount offered.

If the Economy were in such a mess, as some here would have it, why are the markets pricing our 1 Billion Bonds at such a price-the lowest for the DR ?

With better fiscal health in the near future we may yet get to investment grade status! And then things can really get rolling.

Excellent news! We hope some of it is for Part 2 (La Zona) of Santo Domingo Metro Line No.2.

And some more to start the process for Line No.3 (Zona Colonial) which would fit very nice with the improvement effort for ZC by Tourism and others...

Most of the money probably is simply to replace bonds that have fallen due and as the interest rate on the former bonds was higher, these bonds are more attractive to the government

I agree. And it means less payout in interest cost. The goal is to get to investment grade and that will take some more solid macro-economic policies coupled with better fiscal health. Had it not been for that Bank debacle back in 2003-4, DR might be close to Investment grade bonds!

If we can hold our macro-economic stability and get our fiscal-budget-healthy, we might just arrive at that magic moment: Investment grade status and what it represents: Economic maturity .
