Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina met Thursday with Ian Curle, CEO of the Scottish spirits band Edrington, the group that bought a 60% stake in Brugal, Dominican Republic’s leading rum in 2008.

In his first visit to a Dominican leader, Curle lauded the President’s efforts to maintain a good and stable business climate and level playing field for foreign investment, which could be expanded in the near future.

Medina and Curle agreed that having a 126 year-old brand such as Brugal in the global market provides benefits and opportunities for the country.

Curle affirmed that Edrington has already placed the Dominican brand in more than 40 countries on five continents, in addition to new premium consumer niches.

He revealed that after acquiring Brugal, Edrington has invested RD$1.6 billion locally.

The pride of American beer was also sold to a foreign owner and also the second most sold beer is in the hands of another foreigner. But wiser and Miller light. BRAHMA AND SAB. So if you guys want to use that poor point of selling the number one local rum to a foreigner is totally pointless.

The Dominican government is making a lot more taxes and more jobs are being created with that sale, so honestly I do not see what was done wrong with the brugal family selling 60% of the company share. That supposed to be the idea, create a brand and then sell it to make money, or isn't that the way business is to be conducted. Sorry I forgot that Josean and Danny00 are nothing but two liberal socialist Democrat.

Of course, the sale is wonderful news for the DR .Brugal is quite a good rum although I prefer Barcleo in the DR ,but in the big wide world ,Dominican rums are not listed in the best 10 or 15 rums in any of the lists I have seen ,because the lists normally have a level of corruption in them ,,,but I am sure that now this large scottish company has a big slice of the action, that we will see Brugal marketed world wide and be in the lists of best rums

The Dominican government is making a lot more taxes and more jobs are being created with that sale

why would more jobs be created with the sale? the general rule of thumb is that when first world countries take over third world operations, they bring along efficiencies and best practices which allow them to get more productivity out of smaller staff, so they downsize..

yes I find Brugal a little coarse and yes the takeover of a name by a foreign company means nothing in itself , So many brands are now owned by international company and it is only when the production goes off shore that it is not beneficial .. The only problem I always have with international companies in the DR is that they use price transferring to move their profits to lower tax countries , knowing full well that the DR tax office is not sophisticated . I hope we can improve that office quickly

Brugal is the best quality rum in human history !!---rokete.

Preference for a brand of Rum, like just about any product on the market, is all subjective, a matter of personal taste.
Saying this or that is best, makes for an empty argument. Even if one or the other sells the most, it does not necessarily means it's of the best quality in terms of ingredients, process, and know-how in the making of such product.
Corona Light is one of the best selling beer in the US, if not the world, but it tastes like pissy water to me. I prefer Coors light.
Presidente used to be my favorite, but now it taste weird, I drink Brahma, instead.
Maybe Brugal sells best in DR, but I prefer Macorix.
Again, "best" isn't necessarily so. To argue about it, is futile.

Dreadlocks you are wrong. I don't know if you aware how things operates in this country. Remember rum is produce from sugar cane and if more and more rum is produce more sugar plantation will have to be created and by doing so you create more jobs. Think about all those local ladies selling rice and beans for lunch and platano with Yuca for breakfast. It is a chain of people in order to produce the rum. So what they might lay off 10% of their personal but in the mean time they are creating another 20% from sugar cane plantation workers. The local colmados and stores will also benefit. Do the math dude.

Of all of those brands, (they were mostly overproof) I found Brugal to be the smoothest easiest drinking and most tasty of the rums mentioned above. As I saidI also use it for cooking. Appleton and brutal are tied for cooking, but Brugal has a slight edge over the Appleton. The others are not even close. Viva Brugal

actually, Appleton has been blending rum since 1749. Brugal is a newbie, since 1888. practice makes perfect. then again, what would you know about fine liquor? you are the typical car wash barrio chopo who mixes Johhny Walker Black with Gatorade.

All cynicism aside, Appleton is around longer, but I have felt in the last ten years it s not what it used to be. Their 150 overproof went down smooth without the burn. Now it almost smells like nail polish remover. Maybe they changed their recipe. For Brugal, from their Anejo to the 150, it has a consistent feel when swallowed, no burn but a subtle cane flavour. Very nice to cook Pineapple slices in. Brugal is well known here on the east coast of canada, not so well yet in the inner land provinces. It is gaining ground though . Do not sell your DR products down, there are some truly wonderful products you have if only the world would wake up and stop wanting to be like USA

secondly, you are right that the lower rungs of Appleton have changed their blends, and are not what they used to be. they are still better than their competing offerings from Brugal, which leaves people with the most vicious hangovers. if you want a really good Dominican rum, go Bermudez or Mcorix 10 year old. Gentlemen...please I see so much petty trash talk. And yes I admit Indulged my character flaw by adding some. However The Dominican Republic has something that I can not put my finger on, it calls to me, keeps me coming back again and again. I lived one year in jamaica loved it, the people I met were beautiful and kind and could certainly smack me down laying Dominoes. But The DR , it is in my soul. I see the poverty, I know of the crime, I know corruption. Try and open a business. But I see opportunity and hope. If for a day all Dominicans pulled together instead of apart what magnificence could be accomplished. But sadly because of rampant poverty it is everyone for themselves. This is not a condemnation, but an observation. When the average citizen no longer allows himself to be taken advantage off, there will be a fundamental shift in the DR and it will improve. Maybe I am the stupid gringo, (next post)
