Barrick's sprawling gold mine boosts Dominican raw materials exports.

Santiago, Chile.- A widespread sag in investment and a less promising international mood restrain growth to only 2.2% in Latin America and the Caribbean this year, below the 2.5 percent in 2013, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) announced Monday, EFE reports.

"We’re in a very different context than the previous decade with a heterogeneous impact in different countries of the region," said ECLAC executive secretary Alicia Bárcena when releasing the agency’s economic report.

ECLAC had forecast regional expansion of 2.7% in April, but that projection was moderated by performance by various countries during the first half of 2014.

The factors ECLAC says have cooled Latin America’s economy include a weakening of external demand for its main exports, of mostly raw materials.

ECLAC says China continues as mostly to blame for eroding global trade, with growth estimated around 7.5% this year, which has impacted commodity prices, although still within a high rank.

It said among the most affected with stymied growth will be the region’s giants Mexico, at 2.5% and Brazil at 1.4%, contrary to Panama at a growth of 6.7%; Bolivia 5.5%; and Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Dominican Republic, with 5.0%.

ECLAD, an agency of the UN, said Peru will grow 4.8%; Paraguay 4.5%; Costa Rica 4.0%; Guatemala and Haiti 3.5%; Chile, Honduras and Uruguay 3.0%, and Guatemala 2.3%.

Bringing up the rear, the agency adds, will be Cuba at 1.4%; Argentina 0.2%, and Venezuela 0.5%.

That's great. When does the society at large benefit? Only 40% of the population lives in poverty.and it is Dominican poverty not American poverty which is almost equal to the middle class here.

Small business caught in the middle

Hoy newspaper writes today about how the middle class in the Dominican Republic, who own and operate small and medium-sized business, has a tough time here. The newspaper observes that big business benefits from special regulations that provide generous tax exemptions. But smaller businesses that have to deal with the present tax and social security structures have to face the reality that the conditions that are favorable for development and growth are available only for big business and not for them.

"We have here the "sandwich" effect where on the social scale they are not poor nor rich and thus have no influence. The fiscal exemptions and other support to investors have been created for big capital investments (often from foreigners) in the areas of mining, energy, tourism, free trade zones,

By the same token I tell you to stay silent on the Haitian threads, since it has been your idol in league with Hipo the one that have made the current invasion possible in order to satisfy the demand for slave labor from the elites and his political cohorts (Diandino Peña). For once be consistent in your life.

As for my using those works, don't worry about it, since by the look of things, my family and me will end up emigrating before the slaves that your darling brought as a condition for all those international loans get to make an Haitian revolution v2.0, far bloodier and nastier than the first.

If you use public work, you need haitians, the farmers need them, tourism need them, to build Punta cana you need them,if you live in a house less than 15 years old, probably it was made by haitians..You could send them back at any time..
Balaguer was very effective using that tactic..

The BIG BIG difference is that Leonel NEVER legalize them in 12 years..He was very diplomatic and smart to accept such a nasty deal.
Danilo gave A FREE ticket FOR THE REST of their LIFE to Haitians.
.Danilo didnt think about it twice to do so.

"The BIG difference is that Leonel NEVER legalize them in 12 years..He was very diplomatic and smart to accept such a nasty deal."

No, that is the very definition of stupidity (if he agreed to the deal without knowing, which I doubt), or worse, SELFISHNESS, because he left for others a problem to solve that he caused himself. Sooner or later the Empire would have forced him to legalize them once he accepted the deal, but he chose conveniently for another pendejo to deal with the fallout instead of pushing for reelection. He could have chosen not to accept those loans, but then, the path to development would have been longer and harder, something which is incompatible with his populist ends. And for the record, that "Haitians are needed for everything" is the pretext that neoliberals like him want you to believe in order to not pay locals a livable salary. The example is that, before the 2000's, with the exception of sugarcane cutting, Dominicans used to do all the things you said.

-The loans are well paid off!The metro since 2012 is moving 200 ,000 passengers A DAY ( source :wikipedia). Make your own calculation what does that means till today.

-"path to development would have been longer" Really? By the year 3000 we should had the metro? What would be the solution? motoconcho meanwhile?

-The "empire" didn't put a gun to Danilo, not to Leonel not to Balaguer..Who is the weakest link?

-Neoliberals " not pay locals a livable salary." Who are you talking about specifically? Don't you know that labor ministry got hundred of lawsuit by Haitians because some Dominican boss DARE not to pay them? Nobody plays that game no more..

I said that EXCEPT sugarcane cutting (didn't they teach you to read comprehensively at school?), all the other economic activities that you mentioned used to be made by Dominicans before the 2000's. Rokete would tell you that much, since he's older than us to remember.

"-Neoliberals " not pay locals a livable salary." Who are you talking about specifically?"

Construction moguls from the private sector (Bisono's) or the government itself (Diandino Peña, one of the darlings of your idol).

"Don't you know that labor ministry got hundred of lawsuit by Haitians because some Dominican boss DARE not to pay them? Nobody plays that game no more.."

If you are ignorant about how international bodies operate, then there isn't much that I can tell you at this stage to make you leave your oblivious and disbelieving status. Let's just say that we aren't that far away from Puerto Rico on the sovereignty issue. Just ask dread about all the strings attached that the majority of those loans come with, since he has more experience with those Intl. bodies than I do. You'd be surprised.

-"path to development would have been longer" Really? By the year 3000 we should had the metro? What would be the solution? motoconcho meanwhile?"

There were far cheaper alternatives for this country than a Metro. An efficient bus system would have sufficed. I would have agreed to a train system if this would have been between provinces, and mainly to be used carry cargo to the ports, though.

We will have to agree to disagree, then. I grew up in the south and east (nee 1982), and all I can tell you is that, while growing up, the only places in which I found Haitians were in the bateyes and the Little Haiti ghetto here in Santo Domingo when I used to go to buy my school list, and even half of these were Dominicanized already, so I could pass years altogether without hearing a lick of kreyol being spoken. The peasants in my time almost all used to cultivate their conucos, and it would only be in the late 90's in which these would begin to leave the campos for the capital or the US and Spain (specially those of Vicente Noble).
