Capacity Media eyes Dominican Republic’s thriving telecoms industry(Update)

Santo Domingo.- Spurred by Dominican Republic’s vigorous telecoms industry and with its motto ‘Setting the agenda in telecommunications’, international event organisers Capacity Conferences announced it would be bringing its event, Capacity Caribbean back to the country for another year, this time in Punta Cana, on February 10 and 11.

Capacity Caribbean marks its 9th anniversary this year and is “once again set to unite Caribbean carriers, service providers and international operators looking to do business and partner in the Caribbean returning to the Dominican Republic with a brand new location, based on market feedback.”

In an exclusive interview Dominican Today asked Capacity Media’s Senior Conference Producer, Merima Dzanic, the following:

– What spurred your return to the DR?

The telecoms industry in the region is experiencing significant changes and growth. Mergers & acquisitions, new entrants and changing market conditions are on the horizon for the Caribbean telecoms industry. Returning to the Dominican Republic in 2015 is a logical choice for us, given the country’s favorable market conditions and thriving telecoms community. This is mainly spurred by strong economic growth, making the industry more important than ever for the country.

As telecom services remain one of the Caribbean’s major growth industries, all eyes are on the DR and the region.

– What is your target audience?

Our target audience consists of regional and international wholesale operators, service providers, data centres, content delivery networks and content providers.

– Describe in general terms Capacity’s tools to harness telecom potentials

We are based in London and Capacity Conferences organises in total 20 events across the globe, concentrating on the business of wholesale telecommunications. Operating for over 15 years, we have built a community focusing on delivering premium networking platforms for the global wholesale community across various international markets.

Capacity Conferences is renowned for delivering high-quality events which are tailored to specific regions. We are particularly focused on building strong ties to the regional stakeholders, where we continuously work on our existing partnerships as well as developing new relationships with the local telecoms communities. Through key partnerships, we are able to create this premium platform, where the international community can connect with the regional industry in order to establish new business opportunities.

– How would you describe the DR’s wholesale telecoms market?

The Dominican Republic’s economy is one of the fastest growing in the region, due to the adaption of policies which have enabled a greater openness to international trade and investment as part of its quest for economic and social progress, including the Dominican Republic-Central-America-United States Free Trade Agreement from 2007.

This has created favorable conditions for the telecoms sector, and the country now possesses a telecoms infrastructure befitting a far bigger, wealthier and more populous nation. This has created tremendous opportunities for the telecoms wholesale sector, which has supported and will continue to support the growth of the Dominican Republic’s telecoms wholesale industry. Capacity Conference is excited about being part of facilitating and supporting this growth.

– How has Capacity Caribbean developed?

The Capacity Caribbean series is now entering its 9th year, and is the firmly established C-level event for the Caribbean wholesale market. The event has continually grown since its launch in 2007, and now attracts more than 250 leading decision makers from 95 different companies, across 31 different countries.

We are now collecting results for an exclusive telecom survey, looking at the greatest challenges facing the wholesale telecoms industry across the Caribbean region, and assessing where the growth is coming from. We also want to assess the region’s confidence with the current regulatory, competitive and investment frameworks.

The results will be released for the first time at Capacity Caribbean and will be debated by Paul Scott, President & COO, COLUMBUS COMMUNICATIONS and Andy Thorburn, Group COO, DIGICEL GROUP. Anyone interested in the results should take part in the survey and come to Capacity Caribbean 2015 and be a part of the debate.
