Dominican Republic warns Haiti on ban´s ´negative impact´

Santo Domingo.- Foreignminister Andrés Navarro on Thursday said the Dominican government is willing tosupport and provide advice to Haiti to bolster its import systems and improve thecharging of tariffs.

He said the way for theneighboring country to improve its customs system isn’t by a banning the entryof 23 Dominican products overland.

The official said Haitiauthorities should understand the negative impact if the ban continues. "Thisis mainly reflected on Haitian society itself. We understand that their concernis valid and have the right to do so, but we know that there are othermechanisms for them to strengthen their customs system."

Talks

Navarro, speaking at aconference in the Economy Ministry on global sustainable development goals toeradicate poverty, said there´s currently no timetable for talks with Haitianauthorities. "This is taking place only on immigration issues."
