Environment: All hands on deck to swat the fruit fly

Santo Domingo.- Environment minister Bautista Rojas on monday said the nation’s sectors need to cooperate with the government to eliminate the Mediterranean fruit fly, which has prompted bans on some fruit and vegetable exports to the US and Haiti.

He said the adverse impact on the national economy is a problem which must be solved.

The official said Environment specialized technical staff conduct research on soils and forests to get the US and Haiti bans repealed as soon as possible. "Technically Environmental will support and assist the Agriculture Ministry to dispose of that fly from the national territory."

Rojas added that technicians specialized in forestry and researchers are ready to go to work to conduct a cleanup of affected areas.
