Canada, Dominican officials eye joint oil exploration

Toronto..- Energy and Mines minister Pelegrin Castillo on Wednesday announced talks with Canadian authorities on the possibility to jointly explore for oil in the Dominican Republic.

He said they also discussed the possibility of developing energy infrastructure in Dominican territory. "The Energy and Mines Ministry’s current mining policy is a win-win-win basis, where not only the state and the company win, but also the communities near mines.”

"We must ensure tangible benefits and mining reinvestment revenues for the key stakeholders," Castillo said in a statement.

Castillo heads the Dominican delegation at a world mining event taking place in Toronto, where he is slated to meet with senior Canadian officials. He already met with Canada International Trade minister Ed Fast to discuss several binational programs.

"We don’t exaggerate when we call our Republic a mini continent. Our diverse natural resources make us a space with much potential, of which we must take advantage responsibly, transparently and safely," Castillo told Canadian authorities.
