For the third time, protesters demand wage hike for police

Santo Domingo.- Relatives of active policeofficers, retirees and pensioners on Tuesday picketed Congress to demand a wageincrease with which they can live with dignity, chanting "discipline can goto hell," in response to Police spokesman Nelso Rosario’s warning againstsuch protests.

They also demand guarantees of labor rigths,and economic and social protection.

"To hell with discipline as long ashunger continues," said former policeman Daurin Muñoz, who was fired fordenouncing police officers’ "onion salary."

He urged president Danilo Medina "tomarry the glory and dignify police wages of those who bear public safety on theirshoulders."

It’s the third protest in as many weeks to demandhigher wages and better working conditions for police, including RD$25,000 permonth base pay, RD$5,000 more for lieutenantsand an additional RD$25,000 for senior officers.
